Find the model number, then go to sears.com, click on parts and put in your complete model number, you should get a parts list and image, you can also order on-line thru Sears.com. Or pull out the brush block and go to a service shop that does Hoover and see if they can match it up.

Either the pin on the brushes that attaches to the motor shaft is broken, or the motor is dead. Did you check the switch on the front of the unit to make sure it wasn't turned off?

Check that the belt is in position, not slipped or broken. This is what turns the rod with the brushes.

The problem started when i sucked a corner of a rug,now it will not **** very much at all??Kenmore upright progressive

This definitely sounds like your belt is broken. The belt is the part that is attached to the motor at one end, and to the roller brush at the other end. If something gets vacuumed up into the brushes that prevents the brushes from spinning, the motor will continue to try to spin the belt, and the motor shaft will then burn right through the belt, or cause the belt to fall off the motor shaft, preventing the brushes from spinning. On an upright vacuum cleaner, if the brushes are not spinning, it will seem like the vacuum cleaner is not sucking well, but in fact the brushes are just not spinning.

To see if the belt is your problem, while the vacuum is plugged, in turn the machine upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. Make sure that if your machine has a rug/ floor setting that it's set to carpet mode, and now turn the machine on. Does the brush spin? If no, then this is because the belt has either broken, or stretched out so much that it no longer can spin the brushes.

Here's a link to the owners manual for your Kenmore that will walk you through, step by step on how to to replace the belt.

I have also uploaded the instruction manual to the main page on Fixya for your Kenmore 34612.

I really hope this helped you. If it did, please help other people who have this vacuum be able to find this repair on Fixya by rating the repair helpful. You may do this by clicking the 4 thumbs up icons in the right hand corner of the repair. If you have any questions about how to replace the belt, or if the belt is ok and something else is wrong, please just use the clarification request form here on Fixya, and I'll be happy to answer any follow up questions that you may have.

Thanks again,

Chris J.

Pry the end caps off the brush bar, you will find hair and string wrapped up tight in the end. the bearing may also be shot, you can try and oil it up a bit to keep it spinning. <!-- from fixya rte -->

Took apart turbo brush and don't know where to put belt to make brush spin...what two things should it connect?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
There are 2 types of Turbo Brushes, the electric type driven by a power head or power nozzle most likely used on a canister type vacuum or a central vacuum driven by electricity and there is an air driven power head. In either case the belt should be riding on the brushroll pulley on the end or if it is an air driven power head, sometimes the pulley section is in the middle, and the other end would run off the motor pulley / shaft. If you have a flat belt it is suggested that you change the belt every 4 to 6 months, if you have a geared belt, suggested change would be one year or so. I am not sure on the Brand of turbo brush you have, but you can refer to your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or the yellow pages, or contact the manufacturer for a phone # or website address, some times if you have a air driven turbo power brush it may be cost efficient to replace the brush instead of repairing the turbo brush. Just a suggestion.
Example: www.turbobrush.com – this may or may not be the website address not knowing the brand name.
Thanks, Don – The Vac Man
