Question about Compaq Armada M700 Notebook
Was given this laptop and dont know what printer to buy. Dont have any info. on the laptop. Also, can you upgrade the memory, it keeps telling me I'm low on virtual memory, I'm clueless.
How were you able to find out thats its a M700 ?

Yes you can upgrade the memory but it is a pain. Most modern systems have a little panel on the bottom you can remove to add more memory but to add memory to a M700 you have to remove the keyboard. It will take 2 sticks of 256Mb PC-100 SODIMM memory.
Explanation of "Virtual Memory". RAM is what your processor uses to do it's "thinking". The hard drive is like a filing cabinet, it is for permanent storage. Virtual memory is nothing more than a file on the hard drive. When your computer does not have enough RAM, it writes information to this file and then reads it back when it needs to. This drastically slows down you computer and can cause your hard drive to fail prematurely because it is work harder than it would have to if you have enough RAM.
The M700 has USB ports so any new printer should work as long as it has drivers for your operating system. If you have Windows XP, almost all printers will have drivers for that. If you have a different version of Windows, just as the printer salesperson if it has drivers for your operating system.
As to what type to buy - it depends on what you want to do. Inkjets are cheap to buy but the ink is expensive.
Black and White laser printers are a bit more expensive to buy but the per page cost is a lot lower to print.
If you want to print colour (photographs) go with the inkjet. If you are using this for work or school and need to print a lot of reports, go for the laser.
Note: Don't forget to buy a USB cable, it doesn't come with the printer.
