Question about IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 Notebook

Problem with a IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 PC Notebook

I recently purchased a IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 PC Notebook for my wife so she can have something to work on and browse the web. This is a 700mhz ThinkPad with a 256mbs of ram. It has a simple 5 gig HD and for some odd reason the laptop continues to shut down and I have to restart it.

The battery is fully charged and even with the power supply it tends to simply shut down. It runs Windows XP.

Any help would be welcomed.

It does get Hot but I even keep in a cool spot to make sure the machine stays a bit cold. The fan turns and It blows out hot air. Could it be its over heating too fast? The battery sometimes is fully charged and it still shuts down and when I run it with just to the power supply and no battery I still get the shut off after a few minutes.

I have almost same problem. I noticed that the fan only turns before booting up (when BIOS routines run) and when booting the fan stops working. There seem to be many T20 owners with similar problem (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthre...) but no solution. I have latest BIOS and Battery Maximizer installed. I already replaced the thermal pad between fan unit and cpu with thermal gel. Does anyone have any glue, why the fan stops turning when xp starts?

does the machine get overly hot ?..can you hear the fan turning ? T20's have a habit of overheating...also take out the battery and run it off mains only....do you still get the same problem ?

Check ur hd for bad sectors...shutting down for no reason is usually this(bad sectors)
also check system information and check device manager..could be software problem/incompatabilty/no drivers installed/or two devices trying to use same resource and shutting down cos cant.

IBM thinkpad t42 new Battery "On line, critical"

The only way is to continue using it that way till it will not go off when you unplug.

The charger might have gone bad too.

Try the first method then replace charger.
