Question about Salton COV760B Toaster Oven with Convection Cooking

1 Answer

Just purchased a new toastmaster COV760B and it started smoking a lot when I plugged it in to pre-heat. Is this just the "newness" burning off or is this abnormal? Just want to make sure I don't have a fire hazard!

Smoking is just the oils from the manufacturing process burning off! If it smokes longer then fifteen minutes at first start up you may need to replace thermostat! but I think you will be ok!

When the oven is on for a couple of min. it makes a bang sound

Probably is the metal heating up and expanding. Does everything still work? Your not smelling any smoke are you. If it still works fine and your not seeing any smoke or smelling anything burning it probably is OK. Does it do this everytime you use it? The sheet metal on the outside and inside can expand and if it is crimped at all it will make a noise when it heats up and expands. I hear this a lot where I work, we deal with extreme temperatures and when metal heats up it expands and pops sometimes!

Does not heat up.

Mine worked for awhile, then started overheating. I (former appliance repairman) found that the fan needed oiled. While I was checking it with the outside covers removed, I saw that two of the connections on the top heating element were arcing and burning! This accounted for a strange smell.

Fan works timer works but no heat

There is no fuse. Take back cover off and all bottom perimeter screws. Outside cover pulls off towards rear once you get all the ** little screws out. Chances are you will find burned connections on the heating elements poking out the sides of the heating chamber. Try cleaning these and squeeze them tighter before reconnecting. Good luck!

Heating elements

I think this is a common problem with these kind of toaster ovens. Mine isn't a Toastmaster - mine is Cook's Essentials (from QVC), and my upper elements have also warped and split, although mine are curved downwards.
