I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop and am having problems with the screen. When I start the computer everything runs just fine. However if I move the screen at all (adjust at the hinge) the screen goes black. The laptop is still running, but there is no screen. I plugged it into an external monitor and the problem still exists. The screen goes black on both the monitor and the laptop lcd. So in order to use the laptop I have to make sure that I do not bump the lcd at all or the screen is black. The slightest movement in the lcd and it goes black.
I have replaced the connection cable between the lcd and base and the problem still exists. The problem seems like there is a short somewhere. I can start the laptop with the lcd in any position and it still works. I just can not move the lcd at all.
Is the lcd bad on the laptop? My thought is no because the problem duplicates with the external monitor. It acts like there is a short. All wires seem to be fine. Could the lcd inverter board have an issue and needs to be replaced?
Thanks.
I HAVE POSTED THE SOLUTION FOR THIS BEFORE. ON THE LEFT REAR THE SCREW FROM BOTTOM OF UNIT TO THE LCD. LOOK INSIDE WHERE THE TOP AND BOTTOM GO TOGETHER YOU WILL SEE A PIECE OF ALUMINUM TAPE IF IT STICKS OUT PAST THE BOSS TOWARD THE PC BOARD. WHEN YOU MOVE LCD THERE IS ENOUGH FLEX FOR IT TO SHORT TO PC BOARD. TRIM THIS OFF AND YOUR PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED. CAUTION REMOVE BATTERY AND UNPLUG FROM AC BEFORE THE ABOVE. BOBBY

Lobobs, Your solution sounds like it is where I need to be looking. However I am a little confused. I could not find any aluminum tape sticking out past anything. Aluminum backing was on the back side of the top lid (behind the lcd), but it all looked to be in proper place. You wrote
"LOOK INSIDE WHERE THE TOP AND BOTTOM GO TOGETHER YOU WILL SEE A PIECE
OF ALUMINUM TAPE IF IT STICKS OUT PAST THE BOSS TOWARD THE PC BOARD"
This is what did not make any sense. It reads "sticks out past the BOSS". what did you mean by this?
Also something of note...The bottom left screw had become separated from the lid base, so basically it was free floating. It was still connected to the aluminum tape just like the bottom right screw and the top two (these three were still connected to the base (ie the lid exterior)). Could this be the problem? Would I need to replace the lid exterior with screw connectors in place??
Thanks for the help...
PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!!
Lobobs you were right. I looked back on your other fixes and understood better. There was a piece of aluminum under the left screw touching the PCB. I removed the the aluminum and the problem is completely resolved. Thank you so much. Next time I will read further to make sure I understand better.

Same problem but I am not sure where the solution is.Please tell me where this aluminium tape is, is it in the main body of the computer, if so how to i get to it? If it is in the lid (screen) where. Sorry but not too confident about dismantling other half's laptop
LOBOBS - thank you, patience in dismantling and then a bit of help to deal with the foil from the laptop owner seems to have fixed it all
