The operating system is looking for the boot device make sure there are no disks in all drives cd , us and floppy if applicable
Make sure the bios is set to to boot from your hard drive.
Restart your computer
During the boot process you will see on the screen a certain key to press usually the Delete or F2 to enter setup this may vary depending on your computers bios other possible keys

Acer: - Ctrl+Alt+Esc

ALR PC: (F2) or (Ctrl)(Alt)Esc)

AMI BIOS: (Del), (F1) or (F2)

AST, Advantage, Award, Tandon: - Ctrl + Alt + Esc

Award BIOS: (Del) or (Ctrl)(Alt)(Esc)

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys you can load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart.

This will set the boot order.

The hardware that you are trying to access is damaged or failing.

The device drivers for the hardware are faulty or incompatible.

There is a connection problem such as a bad cable

for internal hard drives

Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a

secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide

this will be the first to fail

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty

or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs power and data to travel through every working device and continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

My Dell Windows 7 laptop won't boot?

Press the Delete key during start up, to enter its bios settings window. At boot sequence selection, select CD ROM as first boot device, Hard disc to second boot device, and deselect all other boot devices. Means, there should be only CD ROM and Hard disc as boot devices, as said above, in sequence. Select 'Save and reboot' at the bios option, the computer will restart with hard disc; provided there is no CD at CD ROM. Gopakumar Gopalan Google

My pc wont boot. All i get is " reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

This can happen if you have non-bootable media in the default boot device (i.e., you have a CD in the CD/DVD drive and that drive is listed as the default boot device in your system's BIOS). More often (on newer systems), a failed hard drive will also produce this message.

If you have bootable media (the Windows install CD is one example), you should try to boot to it and see if you can read your hard drive.

My asus desktop with windows vista will not start up. I keep getting a black screen that tells me reboot and select proper boot device or insert media? What is wrong?

It means your system is trying to boot from somewhere other than your hard drive. Make sure you don't have a CD in the CD/DvD Drive. Also when you boot your system pay close attention to which key it says you can hit to change the boot sequence or boot order and which key it says you can select to go into the Bios or Setup. Boot the system the go into the BIOS or Setup. Go to the tab that allows you to select your boot order. Make sure your Hard Drive is selected as the first boot device. Try rebooting after saving and making this change.

You might have another part that has gone bad. Check the RAM and see if it gives you any problems.

There is a program call mem test that you can burn to a CD and test your memory. But if your no longer able to get to the bios:
you def had a hardware problem.

Do you have a USB drive attached or a disc in the dvd drive that may be causing a problem?
If not your MBR may be damaged.

I've read this problem due to new hardware interferences with desktop computers, all they had to do is change a few pins around on the harddrives.. since this is a laptop, and is quite difficult and dodgy to access the hardware, the only other suggestion is to reinstall windows with a recovery disk, or windows CD-ROM.

Hope this helps :)
