Question about Samsung SyncMaster 931B 19" LCD Monitor

Samsung Syncmaster 931B monitors flickers for 20 minutes

I have a laptop with a samsung syncmaster 931B as the second monitor. When I activate the monitor, it flickers for around 20 minutes before it settles down. I have the resolution set at 1280x1024 32-bit color 72hertz refresh rate.

I've had this monitor for more than one year, without any problems. I've recently updated the nVidia Ge Force 7300 video drivers on my Windows XP Pro SP2 system.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
rcSingleton

Thanks for the suggestion, but the refresh rate is not the answer.

Actually, the problem is not the monitor. I can connect this monitor to a second laptop and it works fine, with no flicker.

I have PC-Doctor 5 installed and the video test for the nVidia GeForce 7300 and the external monitor itself ran with no problems.

This is a strange one. Again, after 10 - 15 minutes the monitor flickering ends and it works fine.

    Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the answer, but this problem was occurring before the updated drivers.

    Thanks for all the responses.

Its not the monitor. When I connect the monitor to a different laptop it works fine, without any flicker.

But you could be on the right track, concerning a temperature dependent issue.

I think what is happening is there might be a problem with VGA connector card on the laptop.

Its not the GPU, because it passes all video tests and there is no problem with the laptop display.

In order to test my theory, I'm going to bring up the laptop tomorrow and leave it running for around 30 mins.

Then I'll connect the external monitor. If it works, without flicker, then its a temperature dependent problem with the VGA connector card. I'll then just replace card.

    Will let you know

Hi, sounds like a bad capacitor. Since how long does this happen.?
Open the circuit for any dirts/ dusts on it. Also look for any hot capacitors.

Try connecting another monitor to the machine and check out if the same problem exists then its definately something got loose in the machine.just shut off the machine and refit all the cards properly and check out it may solve this problem of flickering.

If letting it run for 20 minutes seems to resolve the issue, it cannot be any setting or software.. It would have to be some sort of hardware failure.. temperature dependent. You may bypass the problem by changing resolution/refresh but there still lies the underlying hardware issue. It could be as simple as a solder connection that is loose when cold. Try hooking to another computer to confirm that problem is on the other as well and this is your course of action. If so, I would open the monitor and check the power supply for leaky capacitors, the tops will be bulged not flat, or there will be some liquid coming out of the bottom.. check the 1000uf caps escpecially. You can lightly tap around with an insulated screwdriver to see if there is a loose connection somwhere, however this may be harder to repair and find. Check the video cable as it gets most stress from the outside connections.. I can assist further depending on what you find.

If this monitor is capable of increasing the refresh rate do so as flickering can generally be associated with a low refresh rate

    Try a driver rollback - To do so;

    Right Click my computer

    Properties

    Hardware Tab

    Device Manager

Click the Display Adapters Drop Down menu

    Right Click your Video Card

    Properties

    Driver

    Roll Back Driver

    Hope this helps

The problem is with the video card hertz rate.

The problem is with the video card hertz rate.I think this monitor has a refresh rate of 60 hertz.
See if you can lower down refresh rate to 60 Hertz on your video card.
If that does not work, wait few seconds and restore original screen settings.

This model was released in 2001, you need to open it up and look for bad caps with bulging top first, the problem can also be in the backlight inverter circuits. Post back what you see so we can guide you further, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

it's your graphics card not the monitor that often has proprietary drivers to drive compiz and other effects.

If this is not a laptop, then it is easy to interchange.

Nvidia is one such vendor that supplies special drivers for Ubuntu
