Question about Dell W4201C 42 in. Plasma HDTV
Hi Dave and all pros!
I just received my folks 42" plasma Dell (about 3 years old). It came from San Diego and I live in CO at 10K feet. I hear high altitude makes the fan run harder and louder. and well its annoying. is there anything we can do to muffle the fan or tricks to tighten bearings or just decrease the vibrations coming from the fan? or is that pretty much what you get with a plasma at high altitude? It has al;ways had sound problems, but thats just a speaker volume thing we dont care about. we were thinking of setting up some wirless speakers near our sitting area to muffle the sound out by just having the speakers louder and closer...any of those you recommend? im on a serious budget! thanks for being on line!
i have no idea what the model is....
Take the fan off. It is pretty straight forward. 3 years is enough time for the fan to start acting up due to lint, dust and moisture in the air. Altitude I do not believe is a factor. Either way you need to take it off and used compressed air to blow it out. The quiet fans only have a small gap around which they rotate to spray a fine spray of clock oil or machine oil after you blow it out. If it still makes noise or you can feel it as you hold it and turn it manually, then consider taking it to a tv repair shop and see if they have one laying around that they have stripped from other plasmas or lcds (they are pretty common in size and proportion) that they will give or sell to you cheap. You can go to a Radio Shack or reputable electronic supply house and find a good match. I'm not sure of the price of a quiet fan, but it beats the price of a service call plus parts. Good luck and God bless you. Robert
