TV won't power on??

My elderly neighbor has a Sharp TV Model 27K-S300. Our electric went out for a half hour around the neighborhood and when it resumed power the TV will not power up?? I took the back off the TV and checked the condinuity of the fuse and it is good. When you press the "Power" button on the remote one can hear a "click" but nothing happens. I could not locate a "re-set" button. Does anyone have any ideas?? I welcome any ideas, it is appreciated. The TV was manufactured January - 1999.

The click and nothing happens means that an internal fault had been detected, and now the TV is on protect mode to prevent further damage.

Try leaving TV power cord unplugged for few hours, so to drain power completely.

If the TV is still on protection (not starting) after you plug it back, then there is an internal fault.

Common faults after a power surge may concern PSU, or horizontal deflection circuits. The TV must be tested by a technician to find out.

Call the number listed on the owner manual, and ask the manufacturer if a warranty extension is available. If an extension is available, this usually cost less than a single repair and cover all repair expenses for an extra year or longer.

There is no reset button, if you can hear a "click" but nothing happens the problem is on protection mode.

If there is no power at all that is a faulty PSU board.

    You find parts here.

The clicking is the power ON relay. It is being powered OFF by the protection circuit which has detected a serious short condition somewhere in the set.

The good news is the set has been kept from further damages by the protection circuit which is acting like a smart fuse.

The bad news is that there are a dozen sections in the tv and anyone of them could be the one with the short and we don't know which one it is.

Most often it is the high voltage section because it is the biggest user of power and current, but it could be anywhere else.

It is possible you could find a repair place nearby that would come in and do a hands-on diagnosis and tell you what the specific problem is - for a fee, usually $40 to $80 for a house call, that is.

It is marginal economics to fix it. This set is not a candidate for any big expense. If it were a simple repair it would be worth it, but this set is only expected to survive under normal usage for around 7 to 8 years; maybe more with luck.

A reset will not help as the set without power is effectively a reset. Since you get the initial click, the set is attempting to power up. During teh power up process, there are problem detection circuits that will prevent the complete startup if a problem is found. If you have no experience working on TVs, I would suggest that you look for a new one. If you feel like trying to repair this, there are some things that are common that can be checked. Let me know what you would like to do and your comfort level in working on these.

Thanks,
Dan

Is there burning smell. If yes you will need to check:
1. voltage regulator in the switching power supply
2. the primary 160 Volt switching transistor
3. Horizontal output transistor and/or the flyback transformer.
Maybe you will ned to contact TV repair service

U should have them file a damage claim with the power company, they have easy to fill out claim forms and in most cases are good about replacing anything that is damaged by an outage, TV's are very sensitive to power surges, so i am sure this is the cause of their problem.

I turn the tv on and after a few seconds it shuts itself back off again. At that point I can't turn it back on until I unplug it and plug it back in. However, when I turn it back on it will again turn...

Possibly the main Power Regulator is damaged!!!

Open the case, then look for anything that burned out, replace it!!!

If still won't start, you need a multimeter, soldering iron, try locate output diode on power regulator board, then measure the voltages, it has 3-4 type of voltages;
first diode it should around 115V-130 V DC.
Second diode it should around 24 V DC.
Third diode it should around 11-16 V DC.
Fourth ( if exist), check diode and should around 5 V DC.

The problems usually start on second diode, if persist, follow the circuit board.

Tv turns off after 5min,1-2 hrs

This will sooner or yet later get worse as time moves forward why?

You have a power supply unit gone bad in this TV.. The reason why I know is this the capcitors I call caps would look swollen and would heat up to a point that the TV just looses power as the capcitors cannot hold any charge anymore as they are defective. If your SAVVY you can discharge the TUBE and fix the PSU buying the capcitors online and soldering them yourself on the power supply unit. check this website out for reference on how Caps look www.badcaps.com open up your TV and see if you got bulging caps if you do that is a major issue and it would need replacment. Thanks for using Fixya.com hope this helps please rate!!

Channel memory reset

Bryan,

Usually the menu can be accessed from the buttons on the console, sometimes by pressing a "menu" button but other times by pressing both Volume or Channel (+ AND -, UP AND DOWN) buttons simultaneously. Menu levels are usually selected with one or the other of Volume or Channel, and toggles/selections with whichever doesn't do the levels.
