SOURCE: Kenmore Electric Stove - Gourmet Edition

Hello! I have this stove in black where something went bad inside last week (made like a crunching sound). It still runs but seems to only be getting 110 electricity. Clock and lights work and the large oven stays warm. Everything was working fine until this happened. Could be an inexpensive fix- I willing to sell it for repair or parts if you are interested. The griddle alone sells for $170.00 through Sears. Cynthia

I'm wondering if my Jenn-Air Model JER8885QCS needs a new probe or not. It's a...

As oven probes age, they can sometimes generate error codes on kitchen ranges and render them inoperative. The error code varies between models, but can be found with the technical documentation that comes with your range. Most manufacturers place a tech sheet somewhere along the back of the range, or inside the console for qualified technicians to use as a troubleshooting aid. Refer to this if an “F” code is displayed on your operator console. The probe may also exhibit other symptoms without generating an error code. You could have undesired heating results (too hot or too cold), or slow preheat times.

The location of the oven probe can vary on different models as well. It will be mounted on the back or side of the oven wall (usually in the upper right or upper left corner). If you suspect you have a bad oven probe, a resistance check can be performed to determine if the probe is good. To accomplish this, unplug the range and remove the back panel. There are still dangerous voltages present even when the oven is not on. There will be two heat insulated wires coming from the oven probe behind the oven. Disconnect the wires and perform a resistance reading across both wires at room temperature. If the probe is good, it should read around 1100-1200 ohms*. If the reading is too low (shorted) or too high (open), replace it. However, I would take a good look at the interconnecting wiring FIRST. If you have a connector plug on the oven probe, often the plug pins will oxidize and not make good contact. This gives false readings and can lead to erroneous error codes. Some manufacturers recommend cutting the connector plug off completely and hardwiring the leads together by using heat resistant ceramic wire lugs. This provides a more permanent and reliable connection. The lugs can be purchased at most hardware stores. A new oven probe roughly costs about $35 - $45 and can be found on line at several appliance parts websites. Higher end model prices may be more.

To replace the oven probe, simply remove the mounting screw from inside the oven cavity, disconnect the wires and pull the probe out. Insert the new probe by feeding the wires through the opening in the back of the oven first and out the back through the insulation (a long screwdriver can assist you in making a visible hole through the heat insulation to feed the wires easier). Once you have the wires through the back of the oven, reinsert the mounting screw and connect the wires leads together. Reinstall back panel.

*NOTE: Keep in mind resistance readings will be higher if the probe is hot. Make sure you check the temperature at room temperature.

I hope this information is helpful..

I have an old kelvinator stove ,the burners work, but the oven does not . i'm hoping it has a fuse or circuit breaker that just needs to be reset. ( I had one just like it and the burners worked but t

Some old stoves did have a fuse for the oven igniter. It could be just a bad igniter. Check under the top panel and see if there is a small black cap toward the right side toward the back. If there is one then it is the fuse. replace the fuse and see if the oven comes on. You may still need to replace the igniter. If it an electric stove then the element is probabaly burned out or a wire burned off.

My ge range has quit working. First the stove top (coils) failed to heat up (all at once); then about a week later the broiler coil failed to heat up shortly followed by the entire oven. The 'on' light...

The stove top is internally wired separately from the oven. Check that you don't have a faulty circuit breaker in your breaker panel. The oven is 240V which has two breakers ganged together. If only one side trips you can loose power to the heating elements but still have power to the control board (to light up ON).

Ge spectra quit.. was using oven and it quit. then i checked the top burners they quit working to.. everything at once

Sounds like you have experienced a short circuit on the oven element which has taken out the circuit breaker controling the stove circuit.
Check the oven element.

Top and control panel work but oven does nothing less than a year old.

bake%20element2.jpg Bake element Most times it is easy to see a failed oven element. Their will be a hole or a welded mark somewhere on the element where a piece of cheese fell on it and caused a hotspot. You can also check elements with a meter or simply apply some wall current to them using a cheater cord to see if it gets warm. If the element gets warm that means it will work and is not bad. If the element ain't coming on but you have checked it out, of course then that would be the thermostat. HEADS UP: When fooling with the stove always be sure the power is off. Pull out the bottom drawer and most of the time you can unplug the power cord without moving the stove. To make it easier to work on most stoves the oven door can be removed. I set the door at the broil position and gently ease up on the door, remove it, and set it to the side. As far as the oven thermostat goes, they are simple enough to replace but quite expensive. I suggest if you have an electronic oven control then that old extended warranty plan is a winner. Heads Up: One thing you want to remember about fancy electronic controls, never put the stove on self clean! The temperature will cause the delicate electronics to fail. I don't care what anyone says. That stove will get to 900 degrees and adversely affect those controls.

Oven does not get warm, suspect it is a fuses but cant locate it

It is probably due to a broken heating element in the oven. These are relatively easy to replace. You can test it with an ohmmeter. It should measure low ohms. If it is open circuit then it is broken.
