The tv died

I have an ILO 28" lcd tv With no sound or picture. We had a brief power failure and when the power was restored the tv did not respond. It is just plain dead. It is plugged into two expensive surge protectors. We purchased this unit from Walmart about three years ago. Thanks, and Happy New Year!

An ILO 28" LCD went dead after a power failure. The tv was plugged into two power surge protectors. It now has no sound or picture. If this is caused by a blown fuse (?) where is the fuse located?

1. Take it to a shop, TV's like PC Monitors are dangerous to work on if your unfamiliar with them. I'm guessing the warranty is out on it since its 3 years old but you would probably only pay for a diagnostic fee.

2. If you have the info on your surge protectors most of the more costly ones have guarantee's on them to protect your equipment. I don't know how hard it would be but you could eventually get them to pay for repairs or a new TV in the end if worse case scenario.

Hi, Fuses normally look like transparent cylinders like this. http://profesanxenxo.iespana.es/electrical/fuse.jpg

If its bad, you can see it burnt out. Or you can also check w/ a continuitiy tester or a multimeter.

Fuses may also be the PICO fuse style, Pico fuses look like small surface mounted components usually tan or orange in color- use a meter to check the fuses, as you cannot tell by looking at them.

Surely it can be a fuse, that is an obvious consideration, but I dont think that going for fuses on power board is a valid approach. Tere are many power boards here, surge protector and TV, and you do not go straight and open the TV to check the power board.

Unplug the surge protector, and try the TV straight on a different socket, after leaving Set unplugged for ten of twenty minutes.

If it still does not start then surely the power supply had a problem,

Few ILo have external power supply, in this case you can just replace the adapter.

If the TV does not have external PSU, then the PSU board had something that has blown.
In there there is no fuse that you can just pull out, but a resistor soldered on board or a capacitor that has blown.

Here you can find replacements.

Try plugging the TV into a outlet without the surger protector to see if its the problem, there may also be a reset and/ or unplugging the replugging it in to reset it.
Most surge protecters will come with a warranty against damage to componants.
If your LCD is getting power and you'd like to check for a fuse inside I would guess this would void the warranty if it's not done by certified technician. I would proceed to getting re-imbursed for your lcd from the surge protector mfgr. first

Good luck, let me know if this helps

Hello,

Before you try to open the tv up and change a fuse, you might want to try plugging the TV directly into a known good outlet to see if the power strips may have been tripped by the surge.

Even when other devices plugged into the surge protectors work, it doesnt mean that that particular plug it is occupying may work.

Try that and give us some feedback.

There will be around 8 fuse which you need to look at . Four will be in and around the power board circuit . The remaining will be around the Main board .

Most probably the fuse is blown in your tv to avoid the further damage there is a fuse in the tv on the main board that blows out.and it needs replacement.the cost of a fuse will be near to $2.

As this happened on a power surge a fuse may have blown.

  • Ekse Jan 07, 2009

That would be best documented in a service manual, but I suspect the fuse is on the power board close to the power plug.

Hi druiden39

Sounds like the power supply on the tv is fried. Is there power to any of the components of the tv besides the power supply? It is possible that the surge protectors didn't work. Check for voltage on the other boards and if you don't get any then I think the power supply is fried for sure and you need to replace it. let me know if you have questions with checking this.

Hi there
Check the fuse at the end of the cord the plugs into the wall, if that is not problem you will have to open up the TV and have a look at the main power board for the blown fuse.

Good luck and kind regards

Sounds like an ordinary power supply failure. You just have to desolder and semiconductors that are bolted to heat-sinks and or look for electrolytic capacitors that are bulged or not the correct reading. A lightning strike or power surge could have blown a thermistor.
