First of all hello

It is maybe one of two possibilities (3 actually with the third one being a corrupted installtion or faulty hard drive)

Solution 1:

1. Check you CMOS settings (at boot up press Delete or F4 or ESC, look around in the menus and see if the Quantum CD drive can be seen over there. If not it is a clear sign that you battery needs changing

Solution 2:

1. Might be that you mbr is corrupted
2. Get hold of your winxp / vista installation CD
3. Boot from CD "press any key when asked to do so"
4. Choose Repair with Command Prompt from the options available
5. Go to the command prompt and type Fixmbr c:
6. You get a set of warning but you should accept and it will fix your mbr
7. Remove CD and reboot your OS should reboot

Solution 3: Corrupted hard drive or installation

1. You will need to check the health of the hard drive to see if its the installation or the drive itself. A sign that the hard drive is faulty might be listening to it and hearing for unusual repetitive hard drive sounds at start up when you try to boot it up this means that the hard drive needs replacing. If there are no sounds then you need to reinstall the OS
2. I suggest you hook the hard drive to another computer and from My computer check the hard drive if its still readable or not if it is and you can copy from it then the hard drive should be ok.
3. Copy the neccessary files
4. Proceed to hook back the hard drive into your pc and reboot with the installtion CD in place
6. From here on you will be required to reformat and reinstall the OS
7. Install all the drivers
8. Install any wanted software (Anti virus and antispyware are a must)
9. You're done

Note if you do not feel so confident about the reinstall seek some guidance from a technician or close friend who can help you out. Make sure that you follow this fixya carefully!

Was very glad to help you!

Best Regards
AL

    First of all Hello

You must check the following things to make sure that the Operating System can be found once more. I am assuming that you were using this and you cannot find the OS anymore.

Solution 1: Check your CMOS settings

    1. Start your computer

    2. Press del or F4 to enter CMOS setup

    3. Under the main window you should be able to see the HDD autodetection. Here you should be able to see the Quantum Fireball Plus name detected. This is a clear sign that you battery on motherboard is out and you need it changed in order for the missing operating system not to reappear again.

Solution 2: Faulty Master boot record

I am also assuming that you are not using multiple operating systems here

    1. Place the installation CD in computer(assuming it is XP)

    2. Boot the computer

    3. Now you should get a "press any key to boot from CD" and you should be able to boot up the Windows XP setup. From here choose Repair or Repair Console with command prompt (depending on your OS) but you should end up in the command prompt

(If the XP or VIsta CD does not boot go to CMOS settings and make sure that the Boot options are set such that the CD boots first)

    4. in the command prompt type "FixMBR c:" (without the quotes)

    5. You will get a number of warnings. Accept and go ahead. This will fix your OS boot record.

    6. Now reboot your system and it should be ok.

Hope that this Fixya solves your problem and you get going :)

    Cheers

I cant open my external hard drive

The Seagate website should have the installer available for download under their support link. You will have to look up your exact model # and download the package for the operating system you are running. Hope this helps.

The external is on but my computer say unknown device so cant use it and most of my data are in there. Even if i keep it cd to install does nothing but give instruction which doesnt help me at all.

What Operating System is on your computer? Windows 98 and Windows 2000 sometimes will need the drivers for the external USB drive. Check with the drive's manufacturer to see if drivers are available for your Operating System. I know the Western Digital Passport will not work with Windows 98 and Western Digital has no intentions of writing drivers for the Operating System.

So the problem is that you cant put your mail archives from Outlook Express on the HD?

You can create mail archives in Outlook, and I suppose you are then able to save them on that harddisk. If you cannot, I suggest you create the archive on your internal harddisk and then copy-paste it to the external harddrive.

I hope this is what you were looking for,
