If the computer is a brand one , like Dell , Acer, HP, Packard bell, IBM etc. , then download drivers from factory website .
If it is a no brand you can track the driver checking the motherboard number, inside the computer.
The best thing to do is buying a PCI card and having it installed, for under $20 you can buy eccellent surround cards, often much better than the chipset on motherboard. See here.
After checking your volume to make sure it's not set on mute, which you've probably already done,
Check in your device manager (Control Panel) SYSTEM/ Device manager under the hardware tab and check for an yellow explamation meaing next to "sound/ video and game controllers". This would mean it's not configured correctly. Re-install drivers for your sound card (this assumes you have a sound card which is likely but not definite).
