I assume what you get from a recording attempt is garbled video, or snow? Audio OK?
The first thing is to clean the video head. The best way is to do this manually: take the top cover off, and using a lint free cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol, or an electronic wash product, clean the head. The head is a rotating aluminum cylinder located near the backside of the deck assembly. The actual heads are at the bottom of this cylinder- you can see them- just place a finger in the moistened cloth, and turn the head a few rotations. You should be able to see some deposits on the cloth.

My VCR is recieving power, power light is on, it accepts the tape, but will not play or rwd or fwd, it really does nothing. I noticed after taking it apart that when it first accepts tape it does load and video drum spins but it is almost like a slow down spin to turn off, which it does. It ejects when prompted but that is it! Megan
