Question about Sunpak PZ40X II TTL Flash

Sunpack pz40X II flash - compatible with Nikon D40?

I ordered the flash, being told it was compatible with "all nikon TTL" cameras.

When I got the flash, the box indicated it was compatible with "D70, D70s, D2X, D2Hs, D2H, D100".

It seems to work right only intermittently with my D40. It does correctly register the focal legnth of the zoom lense...but sometimes pictures are dark (even when flash is "ready" and aimed directly at the subject); sometiimes the whole subject is not illuminated.

Might I have a defective unit, or is the flash not fully compatible with my camera? Thanks.

TTL Flash compatable with pentax K-7

To let a flash work in TTL mode the camera and flash must be from or made for the same brand. Like Metz for Nikon, the Through The Lens measuring of the light, will only work with Nikon camera's. If the Vivitar 850 was compatible with Nikon, you only can use it in TTL mode with a Nikon. If you want to use it on another camera, you have to set the flash and the camera to manual. (sync speed is not allowed to be shorter tan the manual of the camera says..)
The hot shoe should have the same connection. most brands do have their own hot shoe. And never use an old flash or speed light in a digital camera, because with the old ones the high voltage can pass through the hot shoe to the electronics in the camera, damaging the camera.

The flash is not in sync with my nikon d40 anymore. It fires first. Pictures come out dark. The camera itself takes great flash pictures

It sounds like you're trying to use the SB-600 off camera, as a slave flash. While the SB-600 does indeed have slave capability, the D40 does not have the ability to function as a commander. Thus, the SB-600 is being triggered by the D40's pre-flash.

As stated above, the D40 does not function in commander mode. You can mount an SB-800 or SB-900 flash unit, which will function as a commander as well as a flash. Or you can mount an SU-800 commander unit.

Alternatively, you can switch the D40 to manual flash mode so as to eliminiate the preflash. However, you will then have to calculate the proper exposure yourself.

Can I use the Canon Speelite 550EX TTL with a Nikon D3

No. the Nikon and Canon flahses and camera speak different "languages" in TTL. So while the flash may fire once in a while, the TTL (Through The Lens flash metering) will not be compatible and the exposures will almost never correspond and synch up. Get a Nikon SB-900 flash.

Is a Quantaray QF30 compatible for a Nikon D40 camera?

I bought this flash on craigs list today for about 30 dollars. I did research and as long as the flash you buy is a nikon HOT SHOE mount it will work. (Look on the bottom of the flash) it will say Nikon i-ttl. I am using it on my D40.

According to what I read the sunpak dx-8r is, with the right module, compatable with digital SLRs. Check with B&H photo to get the right module.
