The computer starts up but doesn't beep or boot and goes to a message saying what is above in the original statement. Please help.
Check this site and read on how to fix boot block. It sounds like there is a problem with your bios and it needs repair or recovery.

Testimonial: "Thank you for the tips but unfortunately I am not that great at using computers so that kind of confused me. Also I don't have a floppy drive or floppy disk anymore so would a usb drive work? The message on the screen also says that it is checking for cds and then checking for usbs to boot. "

Borrow an XP install disk from anyone. Since you are not installing a new copy you don't need a keycode or serial number.
I am willing to bet however that you are going to need to do a re-install having lost this file to corruption. The source of the corruption is the unseen elephant in the room. Be aware that if you can get the computer running move any personal files to new new folder on the C drive. One that you create and not in 'My Documents' or any other windows created folder. When re-installing windows any/all windows folders are deleted and new, empty ones are created resulting in your loss of everything.
1. Boot the laptop;
2. press F12 to go to boot menu;
3. Selected CD/DVD-RW Drive;
4. Press any key to boot to CD; worked fine...
5. Press R to repair;
6. At the recovery console, selected 1: C:\WINDOWS and hit enter;
7. This brought me to C:\WINDOWS> prompt;
8. Typed this C:\WINDOWS> EXPAND -R D:\I386\c_437.nl_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\c_437.nls
type exit
9. And got the error message: The parameter is not valid. Try /? for help.
IF the disk is in the D drive then use this command instead: expand d:\i386\c_437.nl_
c:\windows\system32\

check if you have floppy disk or cd-rom disk inserted, the bios may have look for the operating systems on this drive. If there's a disk on this drive, remove them and try to reboot your computer.
Make sure your bios defaults to the disk which has the master boot record. usually it's in C drive.
Let me know.
Thanks.

Sometimes you need to do a low level format, rather than the Quick one.
What happens when you turn the computer on?
If the bios is working enough to enable you to boot from a CD download the new bios from asus along with there AFUDOS.exe flash utility and make a bootable CD and copy both to it.
If the bios is completly none functional you should be getting this msg when you turn the computer on,
Boot Block Compatible Version Ver .010
Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery
Checking for floppy . .
Floppy not found
Checking for CD rom . . .
CD not found
Checking for floppy . .
Floppy not found
Checking for CD rom . . .
CD not found
Repeat adinfinitum.
If this is the case you need download the most recent BIOS from compaq and either copy it to a bootable CD if you have this capability or buy a floppy drive for $5 and make a bootable floppy on a working computer and copy this BIOS file to it. Then rename the bios file to A8N32SLI.ROM.
You may not even need make the floppy bootable but I would just in case.
Stick the floppy in the drive turn the computer on and you will see
Boot Block Compatible Version Ver .010
Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS Recovery
Checking for floppy . . .
Floppy found.
Reading file "A8N32SLI.ROM" . Completed.
Start Erasing...

Please turn off your system and power on again to get system back.
and happy days will be here.
