Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Xbox Live won't connect when wireless is "secured"

This has me baffled.

the Linksys WRT110 wireless router works just fine when set to "unsecured". However, whenever you change the setting to "secure", it passes ALL the tests until trying to connect to xbox live. after a long pause, it fails.

the suggested possible problems mention the NAT is moderate and should be open. I can open the couple ports, but why should that be an issue ONLY when on secure? the other is UPnP enabled, which it is.

does anybody have any suggestions?

the Indian lady at xbox "tech support" was extremely polite, but she couldn't help at all.

thanks!

I'm not an IT person, Ranvens.

Does that mean that the wireless router does not act as a hardware firewall when the wireless is not set to secure? I thought it was only "securing" the wireless signal/capability.

    thx!

I will forward the ports and see if that fixes it.

I have a WRT54G, and I never had this issue. (this is actually for my son-in-law)

I'll let you know after I get over there to try it.

    thx again.

    Thanks, Ranvens. That did it!

I admit I still don't understand why the ports are all open until the wireless signal is secured, though. I have a similar but slightly older router at my house, and I did not have to open them.

    Thanks again!

Because your router is acting like a firewall, when in secured mode it only lets through the ports you explicelty specify. This is what all routers do.

There are several places to set secure vs unsecure.

I originally thought you were reffering to the firewall provided by the router.

When you set your wireless settings as "secure" usually this means it will enable WEP, or WAP encryption. This should require you to input a paraphrase (same as like a password). I would imagine that you would then need to insert this same paraphrase into the xbox to ensure it can actually "connect" to the wireless router.

If the secure vs unsecure setting is a generic mode the router enters into, it may be stopping certain traffic getting through, you will need to setup port forwarding to solve this.

Cannot connect xbox 360 to wireless router

If you use DSL I would also check to make sure you are not being port blocked by your ISP. Some will block you if you exceed bandwidth on a particular port rather than throttling you or shutting you down entirely.

hi,
in this case you need to do a port forwarding, which is something like opening the specific ports on router so that xbox will communicate with internet
for that we need to know the ip address of xbox and port numbers for xbox.contact microsoft for knowing the port numbers and their range,so we can do a port forwarding on your router

Linksys wrt54gs router and Xbox live

make sure that internet connection working fine first..if it is connect you xbox via wired or wireless(if wireless, make sure that you connect to your own wireless network and enter the wireless security if there is)...check if you can get an ip address, better set to obtain the ip address and dns of your xbox, if all set and still unable to access internet, access the linksys router setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar of your internet explorer, when pop-up for username and password type admin under password, leave it empty for the username. Click administration tab and disabled UPnP. Check if your X-BOX working fine. Hope this help you.
