Did they state the exact nature of the problem? Hard disk failures are a common malady with computers, be they laptop or desktop units.

If the drive has a hardware problem, recovery of any files is doubtful at best. There are businesses which specialize in that, but it is costly.

Have you tried swapping the drive into another laptop, hopefully a similar or identical model? Also, you could search the 'net for file recovery software, but, such has its limitations.

My sylvania meso only has an 8 gb hd, would like larger drive Taking it apart looks very complicated. I have replaced hd in laptops before but not. without the shop drawings and instructions on...

If you did this once, you can do it again. No shop drawings are required. Remove the cover. remove the screw that holds the drive in ... remove the drive. Insert the new drive, replace the screw, replace the cover.

Now then, what will you do for an operating system since your OS is on the drive you just removed.

Eight GIGS is a lot of space!!! Lets get real. Remove the files you don't require on a regular basis - put those files on a external drive or on a stick if you MUST have them at all times. Keep your drive clean - I recommend CClean, a free to download and free to use utility.

Thanks for allowing me to respond to your question tonight @ FixYa.com in under 180 seconds.

500gb Iomega External HD began making a strange whirring noise about 6 months from the date of purchase and now my pc doesn't even recognize it as being there. I can't get to any of my pictures and music.

the drive is failing, its hard to recover something (15% recovery is me being optimistic) you can try using recuva as a last ditch attempt to get your files (http://www.piriform.com/recuva). best of luck :)

I'v just bought Buffalo's external hard drive about three months ago, the problem came out about two months ago when i tried to transfer some files, and the transfer rate suddenly decreasing significantly...

Is it "slow" only on your computer, or also on some other computer?

If it _consistently_ is slow, then it probably has at least a one-year warranty. So, return it to where you bought it, and get it repaired/replaced.

Blank Computer Shuts Down For No Reason

the old hard disk died a month ago and you got a new new one now rt? that means you were not using your computer for one month. So there is a chance of processor heat sink paste worned out and processor is getting hot. So you need to remove the heat sink and apply new heat sink paste and re-fix processor, re-fix ram sticks also.. make sure processor fan is working well.

if its still having problem, you need to check the SMPS...

Another reason, you need check to the compatibility of mother board with hard disk. That means, you need to check how much size of hard disk your motherboard will support?

Seagate freeagent 500gb not getting powered

is the power frequency different out in india, it's not just the voltages you have to watch!

If you can remove the hard drives and use a usb interface to connect them then software like filescavanger will recover files providing the hard spins up ok.

Storage capacity wrong

There may be a hidden file on the storage stick. To check this goto

start -> control panel -> folder options -> view -> and under the advanced settings click show hidden folders and files.

Then open up your usb stick and check if it has hidden files, delete them all, and then try your procedure again.

sounds like the file allocation tables are corrupt. Try the free recovery program found here: http://www.recuva.com/ and see if it finds your files. If so, copy them off to another location and reformet the external drive.

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.
