    Greetings!

    Some questions.
    What windows do you have?
What model is your laptop? (some models have recovery/some models allow USB boot)

Ok, try to go to the bios. Make sure you have it boot in usb. You have 2 options in usb boot. U can use a flash/thumb drive with windows in it, or you can use external DVD/cd drive.

Other option is to format the HD first then copy windows OS installation in the hard drive.

Make sure when u format this hard drive

That wont work actually, if u install it in the desktop then move the hard disk to the laptop, unlike windows 98 that it will work, with xp it wont. Just try the solution i have above.

You can hook two computers together using a crossover cable. They may have them at radio shack, if not you can find one on the web for cheap. Then you can put the install in one cd and have it install in the other computer.

Erased hard drive, how can install os without the disk?

You would require an installation media to re-install OS, So you can't do it without CD or USB thumb drive with installation file. You can call dell @ 8006249896 and ask them for OS disk, If you wouldn't have received with the computer, they will be sending it to you free of cost and it will only take 2 to 3 business days for you to receive those than you can re-install OS.

Windows can't find any hard drives...when installing xp

It sounds possible that your Windows XP install CD does not contain the necessary hard disk device drivers for the drive used in your Dell Vostro laptop and you would need to load these drivers separately during the XP install when the option is given to use third-party device drivers.

Some laptops may provide options in their BIOS settings to use a compatibility mode of operation for newer SATA hard drives that will make them visible to bootable utilities such as disk imaging software and older OS install CD's.

You need to format your hard disk. Please note that formatting will erase all you data from the hard disk and all the software including the Operating system.

If you have your OS master CD you can insert it in the cd/dvd drive and restart the laptop. This will detect the OS CD and try to install it. In the installation process there is an option "Format your hard drive". You should select that option. Then it will format, mark the bad sectors, create a new boot sector and install the OS. You will be just fine.

Hi das4real! These are the things to consider.
  • Operating system disk - Try to test your Installation CD to other computer. If it doesn't work then you need to replace the disk
  • Optical Drive (CD/DVD Drive) - If Installation disk works then try to clean your Optical drive lens as it may be having a hard time reading the disk. Your Optical drive is working since you're able to format and able to start the installation. Cleaning the drive lens may do the trick.
  • Hard Drive - If Installation CD and Optical drive is clean. Then the last thing you need is to replace the Hard Drive. You Hard Drive might need replacement due to some bad sectors and the installation couldn't write anything on the drive that causes to freeze during installation.
I hope this helps you.

How to reformat my MSI notebook?

You need to have an valid Operating System installer CD/DVD. This could be a Windows or Linux installer or whatever Operating System that you prefer.

  1. Turn your laptop on.
  2. Open the CD drive and load the CD Installer.
  3. Reset your laptop to manually reboot it. If you loaded the CD fast, this step is no longer required.
  4. The setup program will then load. Follow the onscreen procedure.
  5. At the point of selecting the hard disk drive, choose "Delete Partitions" to completely remove all data.
  6. After deleting partitions, create new partitions for your hard disk. You can choose to divide your hard disk capacity into 2 or more partitions depending on your requirements.
  7. Format the root partition now (Drive C) to continue the installation.

You probably are using Windows XP. With this error, you must re install your Windows XP operating system with your XP CD.

Is the hard drive seen in the system bios?Once you upgraded the hard drive did you re-install the operating system.Remember this,,, if the operating system on the drive belonged to another system you will encounter issues when the bios and the new hard drive starts to interact resulting .If you have data on this drive make a back up so you may restore it once the new operating system is installed.
Good luck

Attempt to turn on computer, no OS install windows

Marginal hard drive, hard drive cable, or hard drive controller (on motherboard).

Other suspect parts may be the CD ROM drive you're trying to run the OS install from. It may also be flaky, causing you to think you're loading the OS, but not really and not reporting errors until you discover the OS is not completely installed.

First thing to do is pull the HDD and cable out, reseat firmly and try again. May as well do the same for the CD/DVD drive.

WHATS UP WITH MY LAPTOP 3623

Hi,

This issue normally means that your hard drive is bad. What the computer is trying to tell you is that it attempted to locate Windows, but it can no longer be found. The Hard drive is normally the case for this message. If you want to be sure its the hard drive I would suggest downloading http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html and boot from this CD try and access the hard drive with this cd, if you cant the Hard Drive is toast. If you can the OS became corrupt and could still mean the Hard Drive is close to being toast. Either way throw the toast in the trash and buy a new Hard drive. http://www.newegg.com/

Have a great week,
ArmyMason

Operating system not found

This means it cannot find the Windows OS files because either:-
The hard disk has failed or it needs reseating.
or the hard disk controller has failed.
or the Windows files have been deleted or corrupted (maybe by virus)

Try reseating the hard drive.
If the hard disk is faulty, you need a new one.
Try using your recovery CD disk.
Try re-installing Windows
