Getting into the bios settings does not solve the problem?
    Does acpi=off solve the problem?

  • ariej Jan 09, 2009

The system detects the cd. It tries to boot and then it does nothing.

The computer works with vista en has raid.

Don't ask me what kind of raid. I don't know how to check this out.

I think its the raid that causes the problem, but I'm not sure.

I haven't had the time to try 'acpi=off'.

U need to configure your computer to boot from the ubuntu cd inorder to use the live cd. For doing this you need to set your boot device priority with preference to cd drive as first boot device. You can get into the bios settings by typing delete, F2, F12 (this depends upon your motherboard model). Go through the options in the BIOS until you find an option to change the boot priority. After setting it, save and restart the system with the cd in the drive. Select the option in the cd as "Try ubuntu without changes to my computer". ENJOY :-) Don't forget to rate my solution. UBUNTU is RUNNING... Don't forget grate power comes with grate responsibilities...

Installed ubuntu 9.10 now can't boot XP. Black

Now that you have installed ubuntu which is linux did you make your pc able to do dual boot. It is possible you have overwriten some important files like master boot record while doing ubuntu installation. Most times blinking cursor means no hard drive or operating system. you can try poping in XP cd and try to do recovery if you have it. Also easiest would be if you could boot into safe mode and try to fix the issue by replacing missing or corrupt files.

You are in troubled waters.

The best you could do is do is the "Windows complete Restore".

Since you do not have a backup, you will have to perform one before doing the restore.

The easy way to do this, is to download a linux live cd like Ubuntu (from a different PC) and burn it, start the computer from the cd and save your data to a DVD or other backup option you might have.

To start from the Ubuntu cd, you will restart the computer and press F2 to access the setup page, select "boot" from the categories and and get sure that your cd/dvd is the first choice. Save the changes and exit.
Then put your Ubuntu cd in the tray and restart the computer. The system will boot from the cd (without changing your hard drive data). When prompted, select the first line (start Ubuntu without installing) and wait untill it finish booting. On the top of the screen you will see a menu bar, select "places" and the select your hard drive. Choose the files you want to save and copy them to a SD card or other media (you coul use an Ipod or extarnal hard drive). When you finish just restart the PC and take the Ubuntu cd out of the tray. This will take you back to the Windows dilema. Proceed with the system restore and when finish, copy your data back to the hard drive.

Good luck!!!
