Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I bought a Western Digital 640GB external hard drive about 6 weeks ago and installed it just fine. Have been using it (only used about 50GB) for 6 weeks with no problems. Today a notice appeared from Memeo Autobackup and Memeo Autosync that my trial period had expired. I have never used this software, which came as part of the MyBook, and thought nothing of it. I was uploading photos from the MyBook to the internet tonight, and suddenly my computer completely froze. Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work. I eventually re-started it by holding the power button in andit booted up, but no longer recognized the hard drive. I'm not super technically-oriented, so any help would be greatly appreciated! I really don't wanna lose my music and photos... help! Thanks!

This trial software expiration shouldn't prevent the external drive from working. The drive should be visible in "My Computer", Windows Explorer etc. A quick way to determine if the drive does have a problem, is plug it into another system- if it works there, then you have some sort of problem on the first machine- likely a software bug- or maybe some virus has fouled things up.

The drive says only 50 gb are available even though I deleted all the backups. How do I wipe it clean and start over?

Hi,

If you can still see that 50Gb are available you can format the drive so that all files will be wiped out. Before you do that make sure you back the files. Just right click on the drive then click on format.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Format external hard drive to NFTS

Assuming you are running Windows XP or Vista, the easiest is through the Disk Manager.
Open the administrative tools from the Start menu and select Computer Management. Then select Disk Management in the console.
Now you can right-click the disk and select Format. Chose NTFS and wait for it to finish (which will take some time!).

Do realize that this will erase your data on the disk. If you do not want that, you need to use the CONVERT command from the command prompt. type CONVERT /? to find out about its usage.

Computer suddenly not recognizing relatively new WD MyBook 640GB

Just a shot in the dark, but ..., shut down your computer and unplug the drive. Turn the hard drive off, then back on. Plug it back into the computer and restart. If it doesn't pop up, restart your computer this time with it plugged in.
Is there any noise coming from the drive? Is the green light on the front?
The same thing happened to me and the same drive, but 500gb. I did the above and it fired right back up again. You may have to delete the trial version from the drive if it on there, or from your computer if you had originally installed it.

Don't be so sure that the memory is compatible because the PC runs & seems normal, I ran an Abit nf7s for a week and then it started doing crazy things, I reinstalled OS and it went for about 10 days then crashed again. Changed brand of memory & never saw the problem again, but I won't use that brand memory ever again either, I was losing my mind trying to figure that one out.
