Remove the drawer and thoroughly clean out the drawer. They usually have a syphon mechanism which gets blocked. On many, you will find a section of the softener compartment can be removed. Make sure there are no traces of old softener. The eggy smell is due to the enzymes in the detergent not being properly flushed from the machine. Check the waste water pipe is clear of debris and clean out any filters (not all machines have these) - normally under a cover at the front of the machine near the floor. While you have the detergent drawer out, it would be worth cleaning the area as it often gets clogged and covered in detergent or softener, and can block the water feed holes.

After all this cleaning, run the machine on a hot was with no detergents/softeners or laundry in it, to flush it out.

I would like to know what laundry detergent and softner to use in my front load, and the right amount to use. I buy the H E products and some of them are really sudsy in the wash sink and I have this awful...

You should use HE detergent following the directions for that detergent. You can add liquid fabric softener. Make sure to fill the appropriate compartment to the Min line if you are doing a small load.

I've never used a washer that drained into a sink (always had a stand pipe). However, I suspect that the gummy residue is the excess softener that was removed in the rinse cycle. Try rinsing the sink with hot water after a laundry. This is part of the procedure to clean the inserts and detergent/bleach/fabric softener drawer when you get a build up in the drawer. In the future, use less fabric softener in the washer. Alternately, skip the fabric softener in the washer but use a dryer fabric softener.

Fridgidaire Washing Machine Fabric Softner not going into washer

Recently my wife hollered at me to figure out why she could not get the fabric softner to go into her washing machine. By looking a round a bit I figured out what the problem was and am going to pass the solution on with this tip. The solution is very simple and it will only take you a few minutes to clean up things so that they work like new again. Because of the stickiness of the fabric softners this will be something that you will want to do on a regular basis to keep your washer working well.

Pull out the drawer and on the extreme top left of the drawer you will see a plastic tab that holds the drawer from coming all the way out. Push down on the tab and slide the drawer all the way out. You may have to bend down ad look up to see the plastic tab.

You will want to take the drawer to a sink and give it good scrubbing. Wash everything out, take the covers off of the bleach compartment and the fabric softener compartment. Clean out the holes with a toothpick in the tube that the cover sets on. That is were the siphon action takes place that pulls the bleach and fabric softner out of the cup of the drawer.

You also will want to wipe out behind the drawer while you have it apart.
Replace the drawer and you are back in business!!

You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and other such things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this product, it works great on all front loaders. Use very hot water with the Affresh pellet with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any stagnant water smells. Put the Affresh pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.

The fabric softener is clogged with dried up fabric softener on my Whirpool Washer. How can I get it cleaned out?

You really cant take them apart without breaking the dispensers. Fabric softner is basically wax and fragrance. Add very hot water to the dispenser to melt the fabric softner. In the future, water down the fabric softner.

Fabric softner dispenser

Small brush and plain water. Rub, flush, repeat...

If it's clogged where you can't get a brush, pour very hot water into it. Last resort would be blowing it out with an air compressor...
