On the right hand side of the TV (NOT the remote control), push the menu
button (there are 4 buttons on the side of the TV, menu one is 2nd from
the top) and hold it down for 10 seconds. The green light on the TV
will flash continuously while you're holding it down. Then the language
selection feature pops up. Default was English for me. Push the menu
button again to select.
The manual (http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/4/42pf5421_10/42pf5421_10_dfu_eng.pdf) does not include this
Is the favorite channel menu a function that is normally accessed by a button on the remote?
If so, that button on the remote might be stuck.
If this is the case, the menu may at times pop up all by itself and other buttons on the remote and on the TV's front panel may not respond at all (it had happened on my remotes more than once).
Try to clean the remote control (the housing, rubber pad with knobs, circuit board) with ethyl alcohol, when you clean the housing, you should also clean the holes through which the buttons protrude, there might be some dirt that keeps the button stuck.
It may also be a stuck button on the TV front panel, so check these too.
Also, it could be something else, i just wrote the description of a problem and the solution which to me seemed most likely.
Sorry it took so long to respond to your request for help. You have to use the function button for the television, to leave the dvd function to the television. Just push the button that say's TV and you will return to the television mode of the remote control. Resetting the TV If the buttons on the remote AND the buttons on the TV case do not work (channels do not change and you cannot open or navigate the menu), the TV has stopped responding. Reset the TV as follows:
NOTE: Some TVs have a reset button. If available and accessible, try using the reset buttons before using the steps below. Using the reset buttons can save time.
1.Unplug the TV power cord from the power outlet. 2.Unplug any connected devices (DVD, Set-top boxes, etc...) 3.Press and hold the TV power button for five seconds. 4.Plug the TV power cord back into the power outlet and turn on the TV. 5.Open the on-screen menu to confirm that the TV is responding again. 6.Turn off the TV and reconnect the devices. 7.Turn on the TV.
Make sure the TV is on and: 1) Press and hold the Menu button on your TV SET 2) Press and hold the Menu button on your REMOTE CONTROL (at the same time) 3) Continue holding BOTH buttons down for 5 secconds or until the Service Menu pops up 4) Release the MENU button from your REMOTE CONTROL, then release the MENU button from the TV Set. 5) Press and hold ENTER (or OK) on the TV Set, then: 6) Press and hold MUTE on the REMOTE CONTROL (while still holding down the ENTER button on the TV SET 7) Holding both buttons down should lead to the Lamp Life Hours screen to pop up. Release the MUTE button the REMOTE CONTROL, then release the ENTER (or OK) button on the TV Set.
9) To Check if it was a success 10) Now press SELECT, then SELECT again to confirm the reset of the counter
** If the procedure above does not work swap steps 5 & 6.
** For a few special models (including 44SZ8D), you might have to change step 5 to: 5a) Press Enter on the TV Set to enter the Position Adjustment Screen 5b) Press and hold Enter on the TV Set (the TV should go back to the main Service Menu, continue holding Enter) and now also hold down the MUTE button on your REMOTE CONTROL. After about 5 seconds, your Lamp Life Counter should pop up.
Usually, this means that something has spilled into the front of the set and has contaminated the pushbuttons. If one of the channel pushbuttons has fluid in it, the set will just sit there searching for channels and will not respond to any other commands. The computer thinks you are pushing the channel button and responds accordingly. When you push another button the computer does nothing because it thinks that you are pressing 2 buttons at the same time. The board should be cleaned and any contaminated pushbuttons replaced by a qualified tech.
Yes you can replace the chip, BUT, first try to clean the button contacts. I have to do that to my remotes, phones, and RCA TV (yes I have one too) etc.. around my house. Just needs a good cleaning. Don't forget to unplug the TV.
