First of all HI :)

The main problem you have is that the file system of your hard drive is FAT32 not NTFS. You need to change it to NTFS in order to work. Here is how.

>> Copy all your data (the 50+GB you used) on to another hard drive
>> Now from My Computer
>> RIGHT CLICK
>> CHOOSE FORMAT
>> CHOOSE NTFS FILING SYSTEM
>> instead of FAT32 and
>> give your hard drive a nice full FORMAT

This will take a while and WARNING you will LOSE all your DATA so DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU START THAT YOU COPIED EVERYTHING.

Hope that this Fixya Helps you :)

Best Regards

Seagate Freeagent external Hard drive won't increase free space when files are deleted?

How are you deleting the files? If you're simply moving them to the trashcan/recycle bin then they're still taking space on your drive. Try emptying the trashcan/recycle bin.

How do I get everything from my external hard drive onto my Mac and then completely clear the ehd?

The problem you really face is a lack of space on the Mac. The movement of files from the Seagate to the Mac is easy. Plug in the drive and open it, then select the items you want to transfer from the Seagate and drag them to the location on the Mac where you want to store them. Job Done. When the files have all been transferred you just need to "Format" the external drive.

My Seagate portable 320gb external hard drive fell on the floor now my computer and laptop don't see it( won't let me get in to the hard drive) , how do I fix this , Important files on it Help please

Since this external hard drive is USB powered and felt on the floor, you could have a broken USB connector or interface card, both located inside hard disk case, you should contact Seagate technical support or repair service, or if you have electronics skills, you could open and check hardware by yourself.

If the Hard drive is 320gb then why does it show up on my computer as 298gb?

This is called file system over head. When you "format" a drive in Windows for example, the operating system uses a certain portion of the space for allocating the file system, Master File Table, and partition information. So, the 298 you see, is the formatted capacity. The larger the drive, the more "reserved space" is used. If you find this helpful, please leave positive feedback.

How to I reallocate my 500 gb external hard drive so I have more space for my laptop - I have 250+GB space avilable for my destop but I am getting "disk full" for the laptop.

you should be able to connect the external hard drive to your laptop and the drive should show up under my computer. Then just drag and drop or cut and paste any files you want to move to the external hard drive.

hope this helps.

Seagate 320GB will not accept a 5GB file despite ample space

First of all HI :)

I posted this on your other thead as well but for some reason it is not getting through. The main problem you have is that the file system of your hard drive is FAT32 not NTFS. You need to change it to NTFS in order to work. Here is how.

>> Copy all your data (the 50+GB you used) on to another hard drive
>> Now from My Computer

>> give your hard drive a nice full FORMAT

This will take a while and WARNING you will LOSE all your DATA so DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU START THAT YOU COPIED EVERYTHING.

Hope that this Fixya Helps you :) With reference to the you do not have permission message it means that you are not logged in as administrator. Best solution is to clean it up on a computer on which you are the administrator to make full use of it.
