Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS630/W Notebook

2 Answers

Hi, it may seem stupid... but my cat knocked over a coke on a nearby table as my laptop and it got it a little wet on the upper right hand side where the power button is. It shut down by itself about 1 minute later. There was not a lot of coke, but l am scared as this laptop is my life. l have a VAIO VGN-FE855E if that in any way helps... l let it dry and l was thinking of trying to restart it tomorrow... Please don't laugh at me... and also PLEASE give me some good news...? If it helps, SONY is a good company as 3 years ago l got thrown into a pool with my mini disk player (so that one really got wet) and after letting it dry for about 4 days it worked again...? It still works... l know laptops are more fragile... but please!!!!

hehe, l won't - he is 14 and l forgave many things to him...
well, there might be a problem with taking it back to the store as l bought it in the states and l live in romania where l am right now...
l don't know if romanian techs can help... should l restart it now...?

ok, it's been 24 hr now... and l re-screwed all the screws...

l was not able to take off the back cover, but l hope that l was able to at least let it "breathe"...?

should l try and power it up again or wait longer?... especially since
it's coke, l am very worried because of the sugar in it...

l started an experiment and placed a drop of coke on a piece of plastic
just like the laptop and see when it dries... it's still sticky...

if it would be the same inside... should l wait until it's all dried up...?

    IT WORKS!!!!

So for the newbies out there: leave it to dry for at least 24 hours and try it...

The "right steps" i took are"

    1. turn off computer (if by then it didn't shut down)

    2. unplug and take battery out

    3. wipe off remaining liquid

    4. leave to dry for AT LEAST 24 hours

    5. fire it up

    Kisses and thanks, mona.

Ok This is about all you can do - start up the laptop if you have given it sufficient time to dry Thoroughly. It should power up without any problem. The board inside and below that start up button is sensitive to moisture but consider this - when a fire alarm goes off in an office and the overhead sprinkler systems come on sometimes pouring hundreds of gallons onto the office equipment the recovery teams go in and meticulously dry all components and then start them back up. Not all work but usually a high percentage of them do. Good Luck and Try to have a little faith. Fire it up.

    Dear Mona,

I am so glad that your laptop is working properly now. I really hope I was able to help and I apologize that I was unable to respond more quickly when you had a second question about it. I would not clean it off with alcohol if it is working properly now. If there was any problem it would of occured by now.

Aside from the problem with the laptop would you consider sharing photos and info about where you are? I am an avid photographer and I would love to send you photos to see what you think. I am extremely interested in scenery photography so I live in a place that is perfect for that. I live in the mountainous region of Colorado,USA. I also have a friend who lives in Scotland that I met through Fixya and he loves exchanging stories and photos. If you are interested my email address is

According to my friend in Scotland the best email for Europe to the States is Live or Hotmail and this has worked very well.

    Good for you again~~~!!!

SOURCE: Laptop got wet...?

In similar cases like this I have taken the keyboard out of the laptop and rinsed it out immediately. In your case I would just go ahead and let it sit for a couple of days and try it then. Let me know how it works out for you

I would wait in till it's dry it would be the safest thing to do. Though as long as it didn't sink to deep into your computer it will be fine unless some hardware got wet, then it would cause problems and you would need to replace those parts. Good luck.
