1 Answer

I just bought a netgear switch 5 port 1 gbps and installed it to the router. i am able to get one computer which was already one the router to work however the other two i have connected will not connect to the internet. I get limited or no connectivity and i am unable to renew the IP add. to try and troubleshoot this problem. I would think if it was the switch no comp. would connect...Any ideas..Ps. i have also pinged the comps and they are fine??????

Well i figured i had an address issue however i am really not that ip literate LMAO. I only knew to check the ping as i have had tech support with cable modem before. i will try this with the ip address however i am unsure what to do if they do not match as generally windows can repair connection issues with this type of problem. The switch i am using is only a 5 port net gear 1gb switch it will not assign only clone the same ip the router is putting out rite? Is ther an easy way to fix DHCP issues without sitting on the phone witing for netgear for half the day??? LOL and ty for any help i greatly appreciate it.

If you can't release and renew the IP address, it means the router does not give out DHCP or you are not using DHCP. When you PING the other computers, are you in the same domain (ie

Get the IP address of the first computer that works, unplug it, plug in a second computer alone and get it's IP address. If it's not similar, you have DHCP issues. But you probably knew that :-)

I've got a BT HomeHub which works fine with a 4-port Ethernet switch to give me a small home network of 1 Mac Pro, 1 Laptop and 1 printer. I have an older Netgear RO318 Router - with 8-ports. But when...

When you use the older Netgear RO318 Router, make sure you don't use the WAN/Internet port, only use the numbered switch ports of the router.

Hi I would like o hook up a netgear prosafe 8port gigabit switch to my pc and run an ethernet cable which is allready hardwired to my sony bluray player so I can enjoy netflix

It would be much easier to use a simpler device, namely any Netgear 10/100 wireless router.

Cable-modem (or DSL-modem) --> Router's WAN port

Router's LAN port #1 --> your desktop computer
Router's LAN port #2 --> your Sony player
Router's wireless adapter --> your iPod Touch's WiFi adapter

Since the cable-modem (or DSL-modem) is only delivering 5 to 25 Mbits/second to your router,
unless you are paying a _lot_ of money per month to your ISP,
there's no need to buy/use expensive "gigabit" equipment.

How to manually set up the router from Netgear?

To log into a NETGEAR router:
  1. In your Web browser, navigate to the router login page. By default, one or all of the following URLs should work:
    • or
    • or
Note: You can sometimes find the login URL on a sticker on the bottom or back of the router.

  2. Enter the username (admin) and the password.
    • The default password is password, or for older routers, 1234.
    • If you have already changed the default password, use the password you assigned the router. Passwords are case sensitive.
    • If you have already changed the password and do not remember it, you have to reset the router to factory defaults in order to use the default password. Resetting a router to factory defaults erases all changes you have made to the router's configuration files.

I just bought a laptop computer and I already had a desktop. My internet provider is Hugesnet Satelite. I bought a Netgear N600 wireless dual band router thinking I could just hook it up to my desktop...

The HN9000 should have an ethernet port. You will require two ethernet cables to connect the desktop to the router.
1. Connect the ethernet cable from the Modem to the Ethernet Input port on the Router (It is generally placed away from the other ports on the back of the router.) 2. Connect another ethernet cord from one of the output ports on the router to the desktop computer. 3. On the laptop, turn on your wireless card. The process for this differs from computer to computer. If you were to provide the model of laptop, I could provide you specific instructions. 4. The network setup should be complete.

I got a NETGEAR router and I have been trying to get my Motorola SURFboard to recognize it. I had the USB connection installed and the NETGEAR uses ethernet, so I tried to install the ethernet but my...

The Cable modem must be disconnected from the computer. You cannot use USB and Ethernet at the same time.

1. Turn off power to the Cable Modem and the Netgear Router. Do the same with the computer.
2. Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the router's WAN (Internet) port.
3. Connect another ethernet cable from one of the remaining 4 LAN ports on the router to the computer's ethernet port.

4. Now power on the Cable Modem ONLY. Wait for the modem to sync up with your service provider
5. After about 2-5 minutes power up the router and wait about 1-2 minutes.
6. Now power on your PC.

Check and see if you have internet access. If not you may have to uninstall any cable modem software related to USB connection. if this is the case, then you may have to repeat steps 4-6.

Since most cable internet providers do not use proprietary connection settings, your internet connection should be up and running without changing any settings in the router or modem.

If this does not resolve your issues, we can continue to work with you.

No install CD needed with valid working internet with modem. First you need to turn off your computer then connect the working hsi modem to the Netgear router with the ethernet cord (looks like a thicker telephone wire) connect the ethernet cord from the back of the modem to the first single port on the Netgear not the ports labeled 1-4. Then with another ethernet cable snap one end into one of the 4 ports available and the other end snap into your computers ethernet port. Then unplug the MODEMs power cord for 30sec plug it back in wait for modem to boot back up with all of its lights and turn the computer back on. After install is finished you can now go and download your routers firmware from Netgear. In your address bar where it reads http://.........go ahead and highlight this and backspace it all until it clears to blank. Type in and then hit enter. A window will pop up asking for username and password. For username type in "admin" for password type in "password" this is default and will always work unless someone has changed the username and password already on your home network, in which case contact netgear support. But if it does work the you will get Negear Smart Wizard. Here is where you can click on "Setup Wizard" and follow the prompts to download latest firmware and then Finished. Close down the netgear page and happy wireless internet surfing.

I bought a netgear FS605 swtich and it doesn't work on the ps3.

Yes you must by a router my friend.

The problem is your ISP will not give out extra Ip addresses for additional clients. The router will have a dhcp server built in and that will fix the problems at hand.

Do i need a disk to install a netgear wireless?

You need a network cable (cat5e) to connect the cable modem to the wan or Internet port on the router. Then another network cable to connect the router port(1-4) to the computer's network (NIC) port. If you are going wireless, you do not need to connect the second cable.
You do not need a disk. just power down the cable modem, router and computer.
Hook it all up, then power up the cable modem first, wait 30 seconds, then power up the router, wait 30 seconds, then power up the computer. You shold be able to get online.
Unless: you are using DSL
and unless the original owner had an encryption key on the router.
