Question about NetGear RangeMax Dual-Band Wireless-N Router with 4-Port Ethernet Switch

I just bought a netgear switch 5 port 1 gbps and installed it to the router. i am able to get one computer which was already one the router to work however the other two i have connected will not connect to the internet. I get limited or no connectivity and i am unable to renew the IP add. to try and troubleshoot this problem. I would think if it was the switch no comp. would connect...Any ideas..Ps. i have also pinged the comps and they are fine??????

    Well i figured i had an address issue however i am really not that ip literate LMAO. I only knew to check the ping as i have had tech support with cable modem before. i will try this with the ip address however i am unsure what to do if they do not match as generally windows can repair connection issues with this type of problem. The switch i am using is only a 5 port net gear 1gb switch it will not assign only clone the same ip the router is putting out rite? Is ther an easy way to fix DHCP issues without sitting on the phone witing for netgear for half the day??? LOL and ty for any help i greatly appreciate it.

    If you can't release and renew the IP address, it means the router does not give out DHCP or you are not using DHCP. When you PING the other computers, are you in the same domain (ie 192.168.1.2....255)?



    Get the IP address of the first computer that works, unplug it, plug in a second computer alone and get it's IP address. If it's not similar, you have DHCP issues. But you probably knew that :-)

Ahh, now I understand. Somewhere in the instructions, you need to turn your Belkin into a Wireless Access Point. The Netgear is your MODEM and router. It's the interface to your DSL line. Since it already has a router, the only thing you gain from the Belkin is wireless access.

There shoud be instructions to either turn off the router in the Netgear, or convert the Belkin to a WAP. I'd do the Belkin.

Laptop drops signal but other doesnt


This issue generally occurs due to the outdated Wireless Driver.

Check for the Updated Wireless Driver for your Computer (in which signal is dropping) and install in the Computer to resolve the issue.

If the Updated Wireless Driver is not available then un-install the Wireless Driver and install it again to resolve the issue.

Not able to install the software, tells me mdm.exe has stopped working and won't go any farther


Manual Setup: This option is best if you cannot use the wizard on the CD, are replacing an
existing router, or are technically knowledgeable. Follow the instructions in this manual to set
up your router.

Connecting Your Router
1. Connect the router, the computer, and the modem.
a. Turn off your computer.
b. Turn off and unplug the cable or ADSL broadband modem.
c. Locate the Ethernet cable (1) that connects your computer to the modem.
d. Disconnect the cable at the modem end only (2).
e. Securely insert the free end of the cable (1) into a LAN port on the router, such as LAN
port 4 (3).

f. Securely insert the yellow cable (5) that came with your router into the yellow Internet
port of the router (4) and the other end into the modem (2).

Setting Up Your Router for Internet Access
To access the router using its login name and password, follow these instructions.
1. Connect to the router by typing http://www.routerlogin.net in the address field of your
browser, then click Enter.


For security reasons, the router has its own user name and password. When prompted, enter
admin for the router user name and password for the router password, both in lower case
letters.


Enter the user name and password. The router will display its home page.

When the router is connected to the Internet, click the Knowledge Base or the Documentation link
under the Web Support menu to view support information or the documentation for the router.
If you do not click Logout, the router will wait 5 minutes after there is no activity before it
automatically logs you out.
Set Up and Test Basic Wireless Connectivity
Follow the instructions below to set up and test basic wireless connectivity. Once you have
established basic wireless connectivity, you can enable security settings appropriate to your needs.
1. Log in to the router at its default LAN address of http://www.routerlogin.net with its default
user name of admin and default password of password, or using whatever LAN address and
password you have set up.
2. Click the Wireless Settings link in the main menu of the router.
3. Note that the default SSID is NETGEAR.
4. Set the Region. Select the region in which the wireless interface will operate.
5. Click Apply to save your changes.
6. Configure and test your computers for wireless connectivity.
Program the wireless adapter of your computers to have the same wireless network name
(SSID) as the router. Check that they have a wireless link and are able to obtain an IP address
by DHCP from the router.

Chapter 1: Connecting the Wireless-G Broadband Router
Hardware Installation
1. Locate an optimum location for the Broadband Router. The best place for the Broadband Router is usually at
the center of your wireless network, with line of sight to all of your mobile stations.
2. Fix the direction of the antenna. Try to place it in a position that will best cover your wireless network.
Normally, the higher you place the antenna, the better the performance will be. The antenna's position
enhances the receiving sensitivity.
3. Connect a standard Ethernet network cable to the Broadband Router’s Internet port. Then, connect the other
end of the Ethernet cable to your Cable or DSL Broadband modem.
4. Connect your network PCs or Ethernet devices to one of the Broadband Router’s numbered ports with a
standard Ethernet network cable.
5. Connect the AC Power Adapter to the Broadband Router's Power Socket and the other end into an electrical
outlet. Only use the power adapter supplied with the Broadband Router. Use of a different adapter may result
in product damage.

Chapter 2: Configuring the PCs
Overview
The instructions in this chapter will help you configure each of your computers to be able to communicate with
the Router.
To do this, you need to configure your PC’s network settings to obtain an IP (or TCP/IP) address automatically, so
your PC can function as a DHCP client. Computers use IP addresses to communicate with the Router and each
other across a network, such as the Internet.
First, find out which Windows operating system your computer is running. You can find out by clicking the Start
button. Read the side panel of the Start menu to find out which operating system your PC is running.
You may need to do this for each computer you are connecting to the Router.
The next few pages tell you, step by step, how to configure your network settings based on the type of Windows
operating system you are using. Make sure that an Ethernet or wireless adapter (also known as a network
adapter) has been successfully installed in each PC you will configure.
Configuring Windows 98 and Millennium PCs
1. Click the Start button. Select Settings and click the Control Panel icon. Double-click the Network icon.
2. On the Configuration tab, select the TCP/IP line for the applicable Ethernet adapter.
Do not choose a TCP/IP entry whose name mentions DUN, PPPoE, VPN, or AOL. If the word TCP/IP appears by
itself, select that line. Click the Properties button.
3. Click the IP Address tab. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
4. Now click the Gateway tab, and verify that the Installed Gateway field is blank. Click the OK button.
5. Click the OK button again. Windows may ask you for the original Windows installation disk or additional files.
Check for the files at c:\windows\options\cabs, or insert your Windows CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive and
check the correct file location, e.g., D:\win98, D:\win9x, etc. (if “D” is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
6. Windows may ask you to restart your PC. Click the Yes button. If Windows does not ask you to restart, restart
your computer anyway.
Configuring Windows 2000 PCs
1. Click the Start button. Select Settings and click the Control Panel icon. Double-click the Network and Dialup
Connections icon.
2. Select the Local Area Connection icon for the applicable Ethernet adapter (usually it is the first Local Area
Connection listed). Double-click the Local Area Connection. Click the Properties button.
3. Make sure the box next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click
the Properties button.
4. Select Obtain an IP address automatically. Once the new window appears, click the OK button. Click the
OK button again to complete the PC configuration.
5. Restart your computer.
Configuring Windows XP PCs
The following instructions assume you are running Windows XP with the default interface. If you are using the
Classic interface (where the icons and menus look like previous Windows versions), please follow the
instructions for Windows 2000.

How To Make a DMZ


A router normally stops incoming Internet traffic from getting on your network, unless the traffic is in response to one of your computers or when using port forwarding. But instead of discarding the incoming traffic or using port forwarding, you can send incoming traffic to one computer on your network by establishing a "Default DMZ Server". (DMZ = humorous reference to "Demilitarized Zone".) This avoids you having to figure out what ports an Internet application wants ? by throwing all ports open for that computer. For regular network operation, NETGEAR recommends you do not use a DMZ. A computer with DMZ loses firewall protection, and is exposed to exploits from the Internet. If compromised, your own computer can attack the rest your network. Instead of DMZ, use port forwarding, as described in How is Port Forwarding Configured? However, the DMZ server feature is helpful: * When you have a problem connecting to an Internet service. Setting up a DMZ will determine whether a closed port is responsible for the problem. * With some online games and videoconferencing applications that are incompatible with NAT. Follow the procedure under your router model to create a DMZ To Create a DMZ for RP614, MR814, FVS318, FVM318, WGR614 1. Open a Web browser, and type the router's IP address (The router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1). Click Go. 2. Enter the username and password for the router (Default username is admin and password is password). 3. From the browser Main Menu select Advanced > Security. Some routers, such as the MR814, use the WAN Setup Options, page, instead. 4. Enter the server's IP address. 5. Click Apply. To Create a DMZ for FR114P, FR114W, FM114P, FR328S, FVL328 1. Open a Web browser, and type the router's IP address (The router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1). Click Go. 2. Enter the router's username and password (Default username is admin and password is password). 3. From the browser Main Menu select Advanced > Security. 4. Click Rules. 5. Check the box for Default DMZ Server, and enter the server's IP address the corresponding box for the IP Address. 6. Click Apply. To Create a DMZ for RH340, RH348, RT328, RT338, RT311, RT314, RP114, RO318, MR314, DG814 * Going through the GUI and going to Port Forward in the left menu bar. * For RM356: Going through telnet and from the main menu go to menu #15. 1. Open a Web browser, and type the router's IP address (The router's default IP address is 192.168.0.1). Click Go. 2. Enter the router's username and password (Default username admin, password 1234). 3. From the Main Menu of the browser interface, under Advanced, click Port Forwarding to view the port forwarding menu. 4. Enter the IP address of the DMZ server in the corresponding Server IP Address box. 5. Click Apply at the bottom of the menu.
