My front loader has to be reset to the spin cycle 3-4 times to get enough water out to put into the dryer.
Is there something that could be clogging the machine to keep from working properly, or a pump not working?

Re: Front Loader not spinning all water out
Sure there is somethng clogging, first check you outlet filter; this is to be done once in ten days or so, according to your usage. Look in your manual for the details. Most machines hv the door in the front of the machine.
Next is to check the hose coming down from the bottom of your tub, to the filter, to see if a sock or something is clogging the hose. Finally the pump.
Plug off the wall socket first. Things shd be fine.

Is your washer a front loader because if it is then one possible solution is by putting less close. I have a front loader and when I put 8 blue jeans along with some other close. The spin cycle is violent and by removing 4 jeans, the cycle spins better and it end up balancing its self. Usually jeans soak up a lot of water, so try to put in lee close and less heavy close.
If this does not help then you might have a problem with the damper shocks (leaking) or springs (broken) if it a front loader washer.
top loader ??? or front loader??? if top loader you have broken your lid switch, will fill, agitate, but when it comes to drain/spin for safety reasons if the unit doent recognize the lid closed it will not advance...if yo have a front loader then i would suspect that something has gotten into the pump assy and preventing drainiing of water therefore will not spin
Spinning both ways is pretty normal. You did not say if your clothes were clean in the end. You may not see much water when it washes, when it rinses you may see about 1/3 thru the glass. Careful with the door aft wash, wait for 2 minutes before opening.
My GE Front Loader is 18M old and it has been progressively getting worse, not spinning the water out......I should have known the Pump had a cleanable strainer as Solution #1 says. Pulled a fist size chunk of wet lint, coins, a necklace and wrappers from the Strainer, not to mention about 2 Gal of dingy, soapy water. Tried a Drain/Spin and after a couple of minutes, went to High Speed Spin for the 1st time in about 3 months. Obviously there is a Water Sensor on the Drain Line somewhere that if the Drain Line still has water in it, it does not allow washer to go into Med/High Spin Mode.
you can try removing the lower acess panel(2 screws along the bottom of front) behind the panel youll see the pump assy mounted to the right, disconnect the hoses and check for debris in the hose assy. the machine will not spin if it cant get rid of water, and it cant get rid of water with a clogged hose. very commom.UNPLUG UNIT FIRST PUMP WIRES ALWAYS LIVE!!!!!!!
My Frigidaire front loader washer model LTF2140E doesnt want to drain the water when set to wash (heavy-normal-quick selectors). It washes put thats it. I have to switch the selector to drain/spin then rinse/spin cycle to finish the load. I checked the drain hose for any clogs....everything is clear. Any suggestions? Also,iIs their any reset buttons for this type of washer?
