I bought a blueray player that only has HDMI out put but the older TV I have only has component input (red, white & Yellow RCA plugs) and an S-video input plug. Is there a cable that will connect

There are no cables that will do this. You will need a digital HDMI to analog (composite or S-video) converter box. The video output will drop from 1080p to 480i. Here's one option: http://www.gefen.com/kvm/gtv-hdmi-2-compsvidsn.jsp?prod_id=11402 . You will need the HDMI and RCA composite video cables separately. A cheaper version is here: http://www.amazon.com/Portta-Composite-Toslink-Converter-Blue-Ray/dp/B00GH92V8C . This one may need a power adapter purchased separately.

However, HDCP (high definition copy protection) will prevent you from watching some videos with the either of boxes. Most commercial Blue-ray movies have this Digital Rights management feature added to them. Some DVDs may be also have this enabled.

I hope this helps.

(unfortunately, the HDCP is written to block any viewing of content with analog monitors. You may be better off looking for a new TV or a PC monitor with an HDMI input. The lower end of these do not have speakers so you'd need PC speakers connected to the audio out on the monitor.)

I have a Hitachi 55hdt51M 55" plasma monitor/TV with no AVC75 controller. Can I operate this monitor/TV without a controller box vias some sort of direct hookup? The only input connection is labeled "in...

You can use either input to use the monitor as long as you have the correct cable. HD15 to DVI can be converted and so can HDMI to DVI. Only hold up is the type of DVI. There are three types and I cannot remember for sure the designation but I believe there is an I, S and a D. The device will have to be able to display in a matching format.

I dont see a coaxial to plug in cable

This "TV" is actually a monitor. It has no tuner and thus no coax connection. You have composite, S-video and component video inputs. You will need a set-top box. If you have cable, get one that is compatible with the type of cable you are receiving (CATV (analog) or QAM (digital).) If you are getting over the air signals, the basic digital to analog tuners will work but only provide SD out. There are some HD tuner options available.

I'm assuming you have a unit with the video input board installed. (Otherwise, it would only have VGA ports.)

The manual is available here: http://www.hitachiserviceusa.com:8080/CMP4201.pdf . If the direct link doesn't work, see the Hitachi support site at http://www.hitachiserviceusa.com:8080/Index.aspx . Use the drop down menus to choose your monitor (plasma monitor then model number).

I hope this helps and wish that I had better news for you.

How do I connect my laptop to tv to use as monitor

It depends on the laptop and the TV. If both have a VGA port, then use a VGA cable between them. Make sure the VGA port is enabled on the computer (possibly in the BIOS) and then set the monitor properties. You may need to reboot the computer to get the TV on.

If the TV has HDMI input and the laptop also has an HDMI port then you need to check the TV specs. Some HDMI ports can accept a signal from a computer (often labeled HDMI/DVI) and others don't. If the HDMI port is compatible with a computer source, then use an HDMI cable between the two. Again make sure the port is active. If TV's HDMI port is not compatible with the computer, you will need a converter.

If the TV doesn't have a VGA port (and the laptop doesn't have any video port other than VGA), then you will need a VGA to component video converter (or VGA to composite video) depending on the inputs of the TV. See http://www.svideo.com/pctocomponent.html for some converters.

Note: the converters are needed since computers output in a different format than the TV input understands. For analog, the computer is RGB and the component video is YPbPr.

A few media PCs might have a TV out port. This would eliminate the need for a converter. Check the specs for the cable you need.

I hope this helps.

I have a hitachi 42 inch plasma tv about 4 yrs old. we watch tv on composite mode and recently it switches to analog every time i turn it off and back on. this is anoying because i have to switch back to...

Well, composite is still an analog signal format. What input does the monitor go to and is there anything plugged into that input? This is a fairly industrial model and has some features that you would not expect a normal tv to have. Check to see if there is some sort of default input selection in the menu or something along those lines. I have used these units before but I'm not familiar with the overall workings. I know there is signal sensing software on the monitor, for example it will turn itself off if no signal is detected for a while, 10 min is default I think. The issue is more than likely a setting that was changed. One other thing you can try, there are cards in the slots in the back. Put the signal you want to come up in the card slot of the input that it's going to automatically. This is a workaround of the problem, but it would do what you want it to.

Tv turns on and has sound but no picture. Only black screen, the menu from the cable or dvd cannot be seen.

Make sure your using a cable box that is compatible with a high def tv, if your tuning a high def channel and your converter does not support high def, it will only play the sound, no vidio at all.

Poor picture quality & audio reception

If the input to a HD tv is not in HD format the tv won't display an image very well. Be sure your input to the tv is compatible with the tv's technology for optimum performance quality Also re-check the input source (such as converter box, dvd player, etc..) and be sure you have the correct input/output ports connected properly. Try to reset all yout tv settings back to manufacturers defult specs. When an input signal is sent to the tv most modern tv's have software built in to select the proper format to display the input image. There may have been a mismatch communication error when your tv software tried to "handshake" with your converter box input signals from its firmware. So try a reset solution and re-connect the tv without the converter and see if that helps. If not e-mail me and I'll determine if the tv needs technical servicing.
