Laptop got wet...?

it may seem stupid... but my cat knocked over a coke on a nearby table as my laptop and it got it a little wet on the upper right hand side where the power button is. It shut down by itself about 1 minute later.
There was not a lot of coke, but l am scared as this laptop is my life.
l have a VAIO VGN-FE855E if that in any way helps...
l let it dry and l was thinking of trying to restart it tomorrow...

Please don't laugh at me... and also PLEASE give me some good news...?

If it helps, SONY is a good company as 3 years ago l got thrown into a pool with my mini disk player (so that one really got wet) and after letting it dry for about 4 days it worked again...? It still works... l know laptops are more fragile... but please!!!!

Hi Jaddude and thank you for the quick response...
however l do not have a lot of experience in computers... l turn it on or off... (sorry) and the question is:
should l just take the beck cover off and let it dry... or is there something more specific you suggest l should do...?

    Thank you so much!!!

    Hu Jaddude again,

l unscrewed all the screws, taken out the battery, but the cover doesn't want to come off as if something is still holding it... l unscrewed all screws l could see... and l don't want to force it...
should l leave it like that for a couple of days...
and about the keyboard... l wouldn't know where to start... help!!!

Hi guys again and thank you so much for your help!
l have unscrewed all screws and l still can't take off the back cover... like something is still holding it... next to the dvd player that l have taken out as the battery.

about the keyboard... where would l start...?

should l let it dry like that or try harder, but l really wouldn't want to force it unless there is something l don't know...

    thank you again, mona.

    ok, l have some news:
the thing holding my computer still together is a silver box next to the dvd player model number: MHW2120BH
    and part number: CA06820-B44700SN
what is that? and should l try to unscrew the side screws...? they are harder to reach...

  • ramonapop77 Jan 07, 2009

ok, it's been 24 hr now... and l re-screwed all the screws...

l was not able to take off the back cover, but l hope that l was able to at least let it "breathe"...?

should l try and power it up again or wait longer?... especially since
it's coke, l am very worried because of the sugar in it...

l started an experiment and placed a drop of coke on a piece of plastic
just like the laptop and see when it dries... it's still sticky...

if it would be the same inside... should l wait until it's all dried up...?

    IT WORKS!!!!
So for the newbies out there: leave it to dry for at least 24 hours and try it...
The "right steps" i took are"
    1. turn off computer (if by then it didn't shut down)
    2. unplug and take battery out
    3. wipe off remaining liquid
    4. leave to dry for AT LEAST 24 hours
    5. fire it up

    Kisses and thanks, mona.

In similar cases like this I have taken the keyboard out of the laptop and rinsed it out immediately. In your case I would just go ahead and let it sit for a couple of days and try it then. Let me know how it works out for you

SOURCE: Hi, it may seem stupid...

Ok This is about all you can do - start up the laptop if you have given it sufficient time to dry Thoroughly. It should power up without any problem. The board inside and below that start up button is sensitive to moisture but consider this - when a fire alarm goes off in an office and the overhead sprinkler systems come on sometimes pouring hundreds of gallons onto the office equipment the recovery teams go in and meticulously dry all components and then start them back up. Not all work but usually a high percentage of them do. Good Luck and Try to have a little faith. Fire it up.

I would wait in till it's dry it would be the safest thing to do. Though as long as it didn't sink to deep into your computer it will be fine unless some hardware got wet, then it would cause problems and you would need to replace those parts. Good luck.
