sorry but from what I am seeing and reading, the clutch screws onto the crankshaft then the clutch drum slides onto the crankshaft and an E clip holds it in place... if that rod is broken this means your crankshaft is broken meaning throw it away

Ge frontload washer seems like it is not aggitating... what would be the problem???

Hello there:

The first thing to check when your GE washer is not agitating, is the belt. Let me tell you how to check the belt & the clutch with out having to take the washer apart.

The belt: Set the timer in the spin cycle and pull the timer knob to turn the washer on.
If the washer drains the water and then spins the way that it should, this tells you that the motor, belt & clutch are not the reason why your washer won't agitate.
A broken belt could be the reason your washer is not agitating or spinning.

The agitator: After making sure that the belt, motor & clutch are working ok, lets check the agitator.
The agitator uses a plastic agitator coupler that is couple to the transmission shaft by using splines cut in the coupler and on the transmission shaft.
Too much usage or overloading the washer too many times will wear the agitator coupler splines. With out the splines the coupler could not be coupled to the transmission shaft and that could be the cause why your washer is not agitating.

The clutch: A bad clutch could also be the reason the washer won't agitate or spin. Usually when the clutch is bad the washer will be noisy, like when you have bad brakes on your car.

The transmission: The transmission could be the reason your washer is not agitating. A common problem with the transmission is oil leaking right on top of the motor pulley and the belt.
As you can see, there could be different reasons why your GE washer is not agitating. You just need to keep checking each part until you find the problem and replace the part responsible.

I have an issue where my washer does not spin but you can hear the motor. I disassembled the motor and the couple does not look badly damaged. So I removed the gearcase to check the clutch. inside of...

if the motor is running you broke the motor coupling,i've seen them rounded in the middle and none of the arms where broke off,if there's oil on the floor and on the outside of the tranny it could be a bad tranny but i'd go with the coupling first.if it's damaged at all it won't spin the tranny

Maytag fav6800aww washer (transmission) problems

“”All looked well but when the motor switched directions it locked up and started squeeling real loud and the belt was going around clutch but clutch didnt move.“”
Was this during the water fill cycle the machine? The Control Board will signal the Motor Controller to spin Motor/wash basket 50RPM in the CCW direction during water fill of the Cycle selected. This is the Spin direction of the wash basket during all spin cycles. If you can observe with the front cover off. Don’t raise the washer top from the base to far or you will spray water around the machine.

You can empty the wash tub with excess water by going into Service Mode and turning on the Drain Pump;
I would go to page 16 of the SM lower right hand part of page, Board Output Test and turn on the drain pump in service mode to pump out the tub.

Enter Service Mode by simultaneously pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

Pressing the Delicates key will lock the lid. Now press the Presoak key the drain pump will turn on. Stop with off button or hit the Presoak key.

What are the 1st two digits of your Serial Number that is your series number found here;

Did your old clutch pulley use the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring?

With the belt off the can you rotate the Clutch Pulley by hand CW direction the Wash/Agitate direction tumblers will turn. Then rotate the Clutch Pulley in the CCW direction the Spin Cycle direction. After the Clutch Pulley is rotated a few turns the Large Wrap spring in the Clutch Pulley will come under tension and the Wash Basket will rotate CCW. Someone will have to verify that for you while you are on your knees.

I'm wondering if you have the Clutch Pulley seated properly. Sorry you wasted money on the Front Struts. Did you follow my Clutch Fix post for the Clutch maintenance/replacement?

Let’s start there and try to determine if the Clutch Pulley will turn both directions by hand. If it won’t I would reseat the Clutch Pulley and try again.

See my Clutch Fix post for reseating the Clutch Pulley and the SM on page 47. Note the 1/16-1/8" gap between the Pulley face and shaft end.

The coins are normal for us folks that don’t check pockets….:)

It’s difficult to rotate by hand the pinion gears of the tranny that drive the tumblers. I have not seen any transmission lock up to date but that is possible.

Let me know if I can help. I know you have the SM the parts view is handyif you don have Sears Parts Direct

Also how much rust on the old Clutch Pulley? You may have a slight tub seal leak and I can help you with that.

Series 90 NO spin and WEAK agitation, good coupler, will drain. The spin tries to go but can't. It sounds like the engine is turning. Agitation happens slowly but can be stopped with no effort at all....

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Then see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service manuals for top load / direct drive washers.

And see the Whirlpool Parts list (transmission parts)

It sounds like a lot of documentation but It should be worth it.

It sounds like broken cams in your transmission.

(Don't be alarmed, if you're reasonably handy, you can fix it yourself for a lot less than a rebuilt or new transmission.)

See the following for how to remove the transmission and clutch.

Tearing apart the transmission is a bit messy but if the problem is the spring or agitate cams, it's a lot less expensive to fix than a $170 transmission.

Remove the clutch (the spring holding the clutch to the spin pinion is a bear to replace.

Remove the 8 transmission screws carefully, the transmission is full (15 oz.) of 80-90 weight oil.

Remove the transmission cover and drain the oil.

Remove the clip that holds the Pull off the spin pinion.

Carefully remove the clip that holds the main Spin Gear on and pull the gear off.

Check the Neutral Drain Assembly cams and springs.

We had a problem where the spring that forces one of the plastic cams into the spin pinion was broken so the washer wouldn't spin. (A $15.00 FIX)

Also check the Agitate Cams (they can wear) and the spring that holds them down. If the spring is broken, the machine may not agitate and you'll be able to easily turn the agitators. (Agitate Cams Around $10.)

Basically, you're checking for anything that doesn't look as it should based upon the manuals.

Washing machiene agitator can only handle small loads

The dogs are not the problem. Assuming you have the series that uses dogs, the problem would be either: a broken motor coupling that barely grabs and can move the agitation with a small load but not with anything substantial (of which it will soon slip 100% of the time and nothing will move), or the clutch is worn and slipping---- just like a bad transmission in a car; when you go on level ground, the car has no problem, but start to go up an incline and the trans cannot do the job because it slips too much. Replacing the clutch/transmission assembly of the washer is no easy task. In either case, you need to remove the motor & pump assembly; this will give you a chance to see the coupling (if it has broken fingers). If the problem is not the coupling, you need to go to the center of the machine; the trans/clutch/shaft assembly and have good tools to handle it. A big word of advise: replace the coupling even if it does not look too bad because they go bad easily and are cheap to replace while you have it all apart. Good Luck. Macgivor.

Kenmore 110.24422300 Washer

The following link explains the steps required to replace the gearcase and clutch assembly on a Kenmore top loader model washer:

I know the link explains how to replace the entire gearcase, but you will need to remove it in order to get to the clutch and brake assemblies. If you are talking about the exterior washer case coming off the base, the link also explains how to re-install the case too. If you are NOT talking about the washer case, then please explain which "sheet metal skin" you are talking about.

When you disassemble the washer, look for signs of oil leakage. It will be honey colored and may be present on the interior sides of the washer casing or directly under the gearcase. If this is the case, I would recommend replacing the gearcase as well. This is generally a tale-tell sign that the gearcase is going bad. In addition, I would recommend you order and replace the motor coupling that's between the gearcase and drive motor. The coupling consists of two plastic pieces and a rubber bushing. This part takes a beating and does require replacement from time to time. It only makes since to replace it now while you have the washer apart, rather than going through the disassembly again later. A new one usually costs about $10. I'm posting an additional link that explains the process of replacing the motor coupling. Make sure you use the part number I provided:

Some of the steps may be a repeat, but I hope to be thorough. I hope all of this information can help you in some way. Let me know if you require additional assistance.

Kenmore 80 series won't spin

If it is draining then the motor is turning the pump so it is ok.
This washer has no belt so that is not the problem.
Remove the cabinet and bypass the lid switch wires and put into a spin. Watch the clutch to see if it is turning. If the clutch housing is not turning and you know for sure the coupler is not broken then you need a new transmission. If the clutch housing is turning but the basket is not spinning you have something binding the basket or you need a new basket drive and clutch.
If you have only looked at the coupler from underneath you may not be able to tell if it is broken in the center. If it is broken again your transmission is not staying in neutral drain until the water is drained. That means it is going into spin with full load of clothes and water. This puts a lot of pressure on the coupler and causes them to fail prematurely. If this is the case you will need a new transmission.
Post back if you have any questions.
