I had exactly the same problem, i dont really know how i solved it but first i thought it could be a memory problem slowing the gps signel so i reset the tom tom to factory settings then downloaded the updates from the tom tom home program of corce i lost all my destinations but i didnt want to do a back up just incase one of the updates had a virus or something so if u want to keep them i sugest u write them down first.and then i got a safty pin and pressed the reset button underneath where the memory card goes twice the second time i held it down for about 10 seconds then i looked for updates again from tom tom home. after that in tom tom home there is an option where u can operate your tom tom on your pc so i tryed that and i put in a destination on the pc and clicked on demo tour so i watched the route first it was a bit slow but started to speed up a little. after it had finished i un plugged the sat nav and went for a walk with it around the house soon as i went out side and set a destination it found 6 gps signels, make sure yhe battery is charged to at least half. well i hope anyone who follows my steps gets the same results, thought i lost 200 quid cos i have had it over two years and its only guarenteed for 12 months. well good luck.

Old Tom Tom can't find signal

Replace the battery!. Maximum life is two years. If you have not fully charged it by usb or ac prior to a trip and then connected it to the 12v car outlet before starting the engine the battery becomes damaged overtime.
Battery level determines the time it takes to make a connection. Always keep it charged. Never plug it into 12v car power when starting engine. This will not only shorten the life of the battery, but wiull damage the SIIRF chip.

Waiting for valid GPS signal

When was the last time you updated the QuickFix of your TomTom? It helps your GPS to find the satellites.
Please, do the following:
1) Install "TomTom Home" software in your computer from www.tomtom.com
2) Start TomTom Home in your computer
3) Plug in the GPS dock to your computer's USB port and place the GPS on the dock. The green light on the bottom right of the GPS should turn ON to indicate that the GPS is getting power from the dock and charging
4) Start your GPS while being in the dock. If the GPS asks "do you want to connect to computer" answer "YES"
5) The TomTom Home software will detect the GPS and check if there are any updates for it. Then you'll be offered updates to install. Some are free, some are not. Be sure you choose to update "QuickFix".

Tomtom one xl V3 - cannot get a GPS signal i've tried all the 'proposed' solutions i've seen on the internet so far... resetting, upgraded s/w etc... no luck when connected thru my PC, it works fine, i.e....

I had the same problem on with my XL 340.s...it was taking 3-4 minutes to locate satellites. I found a solution and it works:

Delete the contents of the ephem folder on your unit using Explorer. Also delete the subfolders in the ephemeris folder on your computer found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\ephemeris

Now, connect to Home and try the update again. I now connect to the satellites in 2-3 seconds.

Good luck!

Waiting for a valid gps signal

A couple solutions:

1) Make sure the TomTom can "see" the sky well... the GPS satellite waves are rather weak and easily blocked by trees, and anything not a window.

2) Hook up your TomTom to the computer (see details at www.tomtom.com or in the manual)

2b) Do a "sync" and download all updates. One of the updates is a small file that tells the TomTom where the satellites are located this week, and helps it sync up much faster. The longer time between uses, the longer it takes TomTom to find the satellites, and that can takes up to 2-5 minutes sometimes.

That can be frustrating with a car full of people waiting to get going and the driver doesn't want to drive without making sure the TomTom works and is giving valid directions.

No signal on my tomtom all day.

Often problems occour when you do not update your tomtom regularly. If you have not updated your tomtom via the internet for a while it will take longer and longer to find a satellite signal.
Try using the included USB cable and software to update your satnav and this should solve your problem
