Question about NetGear WGR614 Router

1 Answer

My goal is to have our laptop and PC work with our Comcast ISP. We were given a Netgear WGR 614 router with no manuals, install CD or instructions as to how to set it up. I am trying to hook up our laptop thru the cable modem. After some help, i was told to unplug the ethernet cable from the tower of my PC and plug in into the router; then plug a 2nd E-cable from the router back into the tower. I did that. My PC still has connectivity (obviously) but I don't have internet on the laptop. I had gone to BEst Buy and purchased a Dynex Wireless G NOtebook Card and ran the install CD. Unfortunately I did this befopre I did the correct connections with the ethernet cables. So I reinstalled the wireless card CD. One of the green lights on the router is blinking like crazy, and all of them are green. Should I just uninstall the wireless card and start over? Or....? heres hoping you can help me...

I will try to make this as clear as possible, but if you have any questions, please come back here and let me know.
The setup looks like a little bit messy right there, so let's start over and clean everything up.
You didn't mention which modem you have, but that is the box that will connect to your cable outlet in the wall. It usually has 1 coax connection (looks like a TV cable) and 1 ethernet port.

You will need 3 things: Modem, WGR614, and computer. Furthermore you will need 2 Ethernet cables. Put everthing next to each other without having plugged inanything ( no ethernet, no power cable!). Make sure that the WGR614 router isback to default settings by pressing the restore settings button on the rear panel of the routerfor 10 seconds.

  1. Before you start, choose the version of your router from here and download the both manuals you see in the documentation section on the left. You might find the information you need on the underside of your router.
  2. Connect the power cable to the Modem. Power light on?
  3. If yes, connect the coax cable from the wall to the modem. (The one that looks like a TV cable)
  4. Connect the power cable to the router and wait until the power light is on steady.
  5. Connect your modem to the router. Plug an ethernet cable first into the modem and THEN into the yellow WAN port ("Internet") of the router.
  6. Plug an ethernet cable into one of the router LAN ports and THEN connect it to your computer.
  7. Power on the computer.
  8. Open the Control panel and the Network Connections applet.
  9. You should see something called "Local Area Connection".
  10. Double-click on it and click the Properties button.
  11. Double-click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and make sure both radio buttons are set to "Obtain...automatically".
  12. Close all Windows by clicking "OK".(The second one takes a moment, because it applies the settings.)
  13. In the open window choose the Support tab and you should see your IP address, your Default Gateway (192.168.1.1) and your DHCP server (192.168.1.1)
  14. Open Internet Explorer and type "192.168.1.1"(or "http://www.routerlogin.net") in the address bar.
  15. If you have reset your router to factory defaults, type "admin" in the username field and "password" in the password field.
  16. The "Checking for Firmware Updates" screen might appear. If so, just be patient and follow the instructions.
  17. In the main menu on the left, select Basic Settings. Set the Log-in button to "No", and check that "Internet IP Address" and "DNS" are set to "automatically".
  18. Open a new browser window and see if you can open a web page. Use an address that is unlikely to be in cache - try "http://www.mit.edu" or so.
  19. Close your browser for now and come back here later to setup your wireless security etc.
  20. If you were successful - sit back for a moment, enjoy the triumph and treat yourself with a nice drink!
There are a couple of things you still have to do, but themain thing is done.
  1. Make sure that you can access the internet from your wireless laptop before you start changing security settings.
  2. Go back to your router's web page and set up wireless security. Don't use WEP - that is not secure enough - use WPA or WPA2 if you wireless network cards support that.
  3. In general: Green blinking lights are a good thing. They show that the connection is established and working.
  4. Once you have your PC set up and everything is running fine, start with your wireless card. It is the same procedure like steps 8-13, exept The connection will be called something like "Wireless Network Connection". You might have to install a driver for the card, but let Windows try to do it first.

So...my fingers are bleeding now, but I hope this helped youout.
If so, please come back and let me know. Others might have a similar question.
If not, just tell me where you got stuck and we will go from there. Accordingto the movie 'Galaxy Quest':
"Never give up, never surrender!"

What is the range in sft of netgear wireless router WGR 614. does it work between 2 floors (ie ground and first floor)

WGR 614 has a range of 300ft radius. Most Wireless-G routers have about the same range. However, the actual range in real-time environment is much less. I think that your network would work fine between twi floors if you place the router at a suitable location i.e. at the central location/ height. Also, based on my on-site experience, I suggest that you may relocate the router to another location depending upon your network environment. It has always helped me a great deal. Placing the router avoiding obstacles such as concrete pillars, walls, steel cabinets etc in the signal path have remarkable effect on range and overall performance of the network.

HOPE IT HELPS...Let me know if you need any further clarification/ assistance.
Don't forget to rate the solution if I could have been of any help!
Goodluck!

I have a Netgear WNR2000 that I want to connect to a comcast modem. My pc picks up an ip from the router but the router does not get an ip from comcast. I have tried a manual setup using the settings...

Make sure that your computer is able to go online through the modem.
If your computer is not able to go online through the modem then you will need to call ISP first.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem
then you need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

I can't install a Netgear wgr614vp router - stops in the middle and says, "we have detected a static IP address" - won't let me go any farther

The fact remains, unless Comcast (your ISP) has given you a "static" IP odds are that your IP is in fact NOT static, but dynamic (where your ISP can change your IP at the drop of a hat. I am wondering what the router is detecting to tell it that your IP is in fact static? Comcast OUGHT TO be able to tell you, without getting one of "their" routers, if your IP is static or dynamic. Comcast has this answer, and no onev else, so keep after them.
At any rate, you ought to be able to get to your router control by pointing your browser at http://192.168.1.1 and log in with the following:
User Name: admin
Password: {leave this blank}
Once you've logged in let me know and we'll take small steps to get you online, OK?

not sure exactly why you would need the setup software... you should be able to plug it in and access the routers firmware and set it up that way.

Any way to use a Netgear WGR 614 V7 as a range extender

The netgear web site has instructions on how to convert a 614 to an access point. You can use 3 of the 4 ports as a switch and the 4th port is you physical link back to the network. The WAN port is not used.

Compatibility with Sitecom wl 031

This 10dBi omni directional antenna enables you to very easily extend the range of your wireless network. By linking the Omni Antenna to your wireless router, you gain the benefits of an optimum wireless signal while minimising the number of ‘dead spots’ (points in your home where the signal is either weak or lost).
However it does not fit the following types of routers, modems and accespoints:
WL-143
WL-122v2
WL-114/WL-517
WL-114v2
WL-108/WL109
WL-111
WL-106
WL-025
WL-018v2
These antenne's will also fit other brands of wireless products that use an SMA connector
