Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

Installed new dvd writer

My operating system is Vista Home Edition Pasario. I installed this unit as the primary master drive, my other burner went out. I installed the Nero disc that came with it and I can not get the burner to work correctly. The system reconizes it but the system freezes up when I insert a disc into the drive. Please help.

I appreciate the quick response, I have already done all the above. It is suppose to be compatible with Vista. I learned today from a co-worker that they had the same problem with their Vista and had to take it in to Geek Squad to have them get it running. Thanks again!

First of all Hello,

You need to make sure that you are doing the necessary things correctly. I will provide you with some necessary steps:

1. You mentioned Master drive? I am assuming that you might have a jumper problem. FIrst of all if you have an IDE cable and not SATA (Sata cables are usually red and narrow) you need to make sure that you are not conflicting any other devices hooked to the same cable. To play it safe look at the back of the burner and you must find 3 jumper positions (SL CS and MA) . Switch it to CS

2. Also make sure that if the "other drive went" unplug it completely from the back as this might cause conflicts. The computer might be still detecting your old drive so there are such conflicts in programs like Nero etc.

3. Now try again once you did the above steps. If you're still having problems try the other jumper position as you did not specify if this burner was on the same cable with another device (but CS should work).

4. Also uninstall any other software that was specific to your old drive as SOMETIMES it might cause problems. Things such as ASPI drivers etc.

If still you are having problems and the device still getting stuck it might be that the drive is faulty or it is incompatible with the computer you have. If so it should be replaced with another brand or so from your supplier.

I hope that this solution was of help to you.

Cheers

Operating system not found

hi goodner,

getting the error "operating system not found" means that the hard drive where the Operating System is installed (i.e. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7), Cannot be found by you BIOS upon the boot sequence.

When you turn the PC/Laptop, you normal see a screen that flashes flashes with screen that displays the ff:

Primary Master:
Primary Slave:
Secondary Master:
Secondary Slave:

The Primary master should have a value right next to it. If not, either the hard drive is faulty and needs replacement, cable is loose,

If you have a value to it and stil gets the same error the operating is corrupted and needs to be re-installed.

My Hp 530 laptop Can play DVD discs but it will not burn

first check to be sure you have a dvd writer and not a cd writer-dvd rom combo .., cause in this case it is obvious why its not burning dvd-es..
Another thing take a look and see if you have a dvd burner into your operation system ..Usually windows 7 have a dvd burner and it burns them without any program to assist it .. but if it is defective or you can not operate it .. just download and install a dvd burner .. like Nero .. and try again ..
In the last case try to reinstall the operation system if you have a hunch that it may be something wrong with it .. and if is still not working change the optical unit and will work

I cannot reinstall windows back onto a working h.drive? PLS.HELP!

Your hard drive went bad. It seems that the kernel and some sectors on it unable to accept any data for installation. Try to use a Partition Magic software before installing Windows operating system by doing the format manually. Then you can install you Windows operating system that you want. Thank you.

I cant get blue ray o my aspir acer 6920

Assuming everything was working before you switched Operating Systems, the problem is likely that you still have the drivers for the previous OS. You should first make sure the old drivers are uninstalled by going into Device Manager, right clicking on the drive, selecting properties, going into the driver menu, and uninstalling them.

Then you need to find the Vista drivers for the drives (either go to the manufacturer's website, or just Google the model of drive you have) and install them. Make sure you restart your computer afterwords.

Hard drive crash, not usable at all; downloaded xp drivers and computer drivers but cannot get them installed. Hard drive not recognized.

When you install a new harddrive, it has no Operating System on it.
Windows XP and Windows Vista, are examples of an Operating System.

Each laptop manufacturer, has their own system of changing a laptop harddrive. Some allow you to press a key or two, to put the laptop in a state where it will save the basic Operating System files, and when you install the new harddrive, it will transfer them over to it.

Some laptop manufacturers do have this option.

You either have to take the harddrive out, install it into an external enclosure for a harddrive, (Uses a USB cable) Then attach the external enclosure via the USB cable, to another computer, and use a 'mirror' imaging program to save the Operating System to that computer.

Then the new harddrive is installed in that external enclosure, and the Operating System is 'mirrored' over to it.

Just information for you, as you cannot do this now with a crashed harddrive.
Your option now, is to buy a genuine copy of the Operating System you had on the laptop, and install it.
Not what you wanted to hear, huh?

You need to buy whatever version of Windows XP it had, (WinXP Home or WinXP Pro), or Windows Vista.
If it was Windows Vista, I suggest getting at least the Windows Vista Home Premium version.

I personally prefer Xp over Vista.
Tigerdirect.com, and Newegg.com, have these.
Look for Software>Operating Systems.

OR, you can simply put Ubuntu Linux on it for free.

After installing vista service pack 1 my dvd rom is gone.

Download the latest driver for dvd rom from Acer that will work with Vista SP1. Also try uninstalling the device in device manager and restart your computer. Vista may find "new hardware" and install the driver from its driver pack in SP1.

Cd dvd writer not working

Try to reload the operating system using disk/Alt+F10 first and try to burn again.
If this is still not working. it probably your dvd rom is bad.

External dvd writer

You would be able to boot from the external drive but you will not be able to run an operating system from it. It would allow you to install another operating system if that is what you mean? If i understand you correctly though, you would like to say perhaps, have windows xp on your laptop and maybe run windows vista on your external? Maybe get to choose which one to run. This is not possible. Sorry. I hope this helps!
