I took a look at microsoft's support site this seems to be the only work around with SP1 installed

  • Just go to device manager -> HID-devices -> Unknown Device and search for drivers.
  • When prompted for how to search for driver software, select "Browse my computer for driver software"
  • Enter "C:\windows\winsxs" for the driver location and press the "Next" button.
  • If you get a popup saying "this is an unsigned driver...", just allow Windows to install the driver.

Don't install this update. Go to the windows update function and make it ask you before it will update your machine. When this update appears just check don't install and do not remind me again box's and that will stop the update from ever getting on your machine.

My dell latitude d600 usb ports stopped working how can i get it fixed. thans

If ALL the usb ports have stopped working, this is a problem with the USB controller. The short answer is that you cannot easily repair this. In all probability, the controller, or a circuit trace to it has blown or shorted. You would need to get another motherboard.

If one is still working, then you can get a PCIMCIA card to usb port that will give you 2-4 extra ports, but this will only work if at east one of your existing usb ports is still functioning

My HP Deskjet F380 has the latest printing software installed; it spools and is attached to my laptop in the correct USB port; but it doesn't print. The message is "no connection." It printed...

Verify that the USB connection is fully inserted in the back of the printer itself. If all is well there, try to think if you've run any updates on your laptop recently, or installed any new software that could be conflicting. If yes, try removing the new software or recent updates, and try a test print. If this still does not work, try disconnecting the printer, powering down your machine, starting it back up and then reconnecting the printer to the USB port. Sometimes you have have a glitch in the USB port that causes your computer to stop recognizing a device seemingly out of nowhere. If none of the above seems to help, it might be as simple as a USB cable that's become faulty. Hope this helps!

There are a few toys and devices made in China that deadshort the USB terminals. I hope you have not bought and installed one of these. I had 2 in the shop a year ago with some Dora Explorer usb toy that toasted the usb once installed. If you have bought and installed something about the same time as the usb stopped working you will need to call the company that made the device and demand they replace your motherboard.

Can the usb ports be replaced

I'm not completely certain, but I think the USB hub will be part of the mainboard, which means you won't be able to replace the port. However if you do have at least one USB port that works you can use a USB hub , this should work as I know Rock band comes with one.
I can't guarantee a generic third party one will work for definite but it's worth a shot.

USB Port Not Working

If you did a Windows Update, maybe that installed some generic USB drivers (hardware drivers).
Try removing the devices then restarting, it should detect them and go looking for drivers, you should be able to specify the original driver disk for the source of the drivers. If that doesn't fix it, maybe a hardware fault. Likely driver fault though. You can also try updating the drivers this way - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial119.html
Or many other ways -

USB ports work at 1.1; s/b 2.0

Your computer is functioning correctly.
The USB ports on your laptop are USB1 ports its pard of the hardware.
Your PCMCIA USB 2 card runs at USB 2 speed and therefore when you connect a USB 2 device to this port you will not get this USB message.
