It could be that the video heads are just clogged.
Get a known good video tape and put it in the unit and let it just play and play and play. Quality video tapes have head cleaning substances built into the tape. If this does not work, get a Scotch Black Watch tape head cleaner. If that does not work the the heads are bad or some other problem.

Will it upscale any device that is connected directly into the system

Hi Craig

You don't provide the specifics of your system, but the general answer is 'probably not'. At least from the standpoint of doing more than spreading a down-rev signal across more screen lines or pixels. There are dedicated video processor units that are specifically made to interpolate video frames and break them into plausible upscaled pictures, say changing 720P to look like HD, or upscaling HD to look like 4KHD. It's all algorithm though, there is no more information content in the new picture than in the old one, so, likely as not, you can end up with a picture that looks pretty much like the old one, perhaps with clearer-looking edges from the hardware/software finding an edge and spreading it across more lines.

If you're running an old VCR with VGA output into the system, it will likely show you a picture taking the whole screen up, but it won't look any better than it did on a TV 10 years ago.

Cheers
D

Sound but no picture. Not progressive scan issue I think.

Have you tried swapping the scart lead ends around, this might work.

Ignorance on my part. Elect went out for hours; when came back on, no sound. Has something to do with onkyo and it's something simple. I've been thru this before; always seems to happen beginning of 3...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, postback with the model numbers of the cable box, the DVD/VCR combo, the TV and the Onkyo. Additionally describe the plug/cable colors used form what jack of what device to which jacks of the next device.

Offhand, it would appear that the connection is basically output of one device is fed as the input of the following device. That being so, each of the devices (except the cable box) would have to be set for which of its inputs was used.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa. Merry Christmas.

I have a samsung dvd vcr combo connected to a jvc tv but when i have press play i get no screen for either video or dvd the dvd runs but no recpetion

If you are connecting the dvd/vcr combo to the tv with coax cable first make sure the tv is on channel 3 and also make sure you have the samsung dvd/vcr combo on channel 3 by using the remote that came with the samsung. You should get picture and sound then if not try channel 4 on tv instead of channel 3. If that doesn't work try to put the samsung on channel 4 as a last option to try. This is only recommended if the combo is hooked to tv with coax cable out of combo to in on tv. Make sure coax is plugged into the out jack on combo and in on tv.

Convertor box and Sony Wega with PIP (2 Tuners) and new Digital DVR/VCR

I wonder if the RF interference from the digital tuner. That box will only allow ouput either through the coax or the AV ports. If you do both you will not get a picture.

If you switch them you have to tell the box what your using for output by going through the setup process.

Is the Zenith 901 converter box for your cable TV.

Progressive Scan Mode

Check for video out in the dvd setup menu, and set it for composite,
It may be set for component.

another thing to try is setting the the progressive scan option off in the setup menu, you wont benefit from it, but at least it might work.
if you already tried using the prog scan and your T.V isnt compatible, you'll need to reset. press stop to stop any playing disc, and press stop again holding it for 5 seconds to reset the system.

good luck!

How can I take advantage of digital cable?

No digital sound comes from Digital Coax or Optical and in order to utilize a digital signal u need HDMI or Component although component wont be truly digital. Try running everything to the TV then the sound out of the TV into the sound system. If its a high def source like high def cable box then use the optical conection on the back of the aquos and plug than into your surround system. if ur system doesnt support Optical or digital coax then you need an updated surround system. If i misunderstood your question im sorry. If u live in CT though stop by Circuit city in North haven. either myself, Dave, or my associate Justin should be able to help you out. and dont worry we're not on commission or anything.
