Cant get 1280x1024 when connected to laptop

Hi there Am I crazy or just dumb? I have an LG Flatron L1730B which I want to attach to my laptop ? Dell Inspiron 6400 running Windows XP. I cannot get the laptop to recognise the Flatron at more than 1024x768. I have downloaded the L1730B driver from the LG website and used it as the driver on my ?plug and play? monitor. I selected analogue as I am using a VGA cable. My laptop has a Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset family adapter running at 6.14.10.4446 which should support 1280x1024. On the GMA Display Devices I select ?single display? and choose monitor, but then on ?Display settings? it offers me a max resolution of 1024x768 (this is also the max resolution offered on ?Control Panel? ?Displays? ?Settings?). (my laptop screen runs at 1200x800). Please help, I?m going mad trying to sort this out. Many thanks in advance

The only way you may get it to work is if you use the monitor a secondary device and also use the notebook monitor as well. But the problem may also be the vga connector converting the signal, as you may have to have a DVI connection on your monitor to obtain widescreen resolutions.
