Question about Acomdata (HD320UFAPE5-72) (HD320UFAPE572) 320 GB Hard Drive

Open Question

Acomdata only reads as USB 1

I sent this e-mail to the acomdata site on Dec 26 , 2008.
They said I would have a reply in 3 working days.
On Jan 6, 2009 I tried to contact them to ask if they had an answer.
The screen came up as an unavailable website.
Do You know what happened to Acomdata? Better yet can you solve my problem.
I believe the problem is in the enclosure itself, and if this is true can you tell me whether the drive is SATA or IDE?
It is possible it's hardwired if so I have a real problem.

Here is the message I sent:
Acomdata December 26, 2008

http://www.acomdata.com/frp/fs.html

I have been using this drive for almost two years on several computers. My desktop and dell laptop have USB 2.0 only.
Last week when I plugged it into my desktop I got the message
"This device will work faster if you plug it into a USB 2.0 port"
I plugged it into other ports (all USB 2.0) on the desktop and got the same message. I also tried another USB 2.0 cord rated 480mbs
I then tried it on the Dell laptop (I also used it many times on that computer and it ran USB 2.0)
It gave me the same message and ran on USB 1.0 speed.

My friend has the identical unit. I plugged it into my desktop using the same USB connection, cable and power supply I use on mine.

It immediately was accepted and ran at the faster USB 2.0
speed.

I have exhausted all trial and error approaches and I concluded the problem only with this unit and not the computer or interface.

Is this a mechanical problem with the drive or is there is an upgraded driver that will solve the problem?

Any 12 volt dc 750ma+ power adapter will work.Install the right plug on the end for your external drive. You can go to radioshack and they will have the proper end for your drive. You have to make sure the polarity is right though as it's direct current. The tip or center must be positive. I recommend testing this with a volt meter before plugging it into your drive to ensure proper polarity. I hope this helps you.

The clicking and running noisy is a bad sign. The actual drive in the unit has failed. Sometimes the controler board in the external case goes and you can simply replace the case for $10 online and be up and running. I'm a data recovery expert. If you have irreplacible data on the drive that you need recovered let me know. I'll recover the data for you I have all the required equipment. The only thing you need to pay for is the exact same make and model of the internal HD in the case and postage both ways. I'm retired and I do this for a hobby now. Let me know if you need me services. Hope you find this helpful. My e-mail address is geokohler@gmail.com if you want to send me your number and we can discuss the procedure.
Thanks,
George

Sounds like the drive has seized spindle... Not good news.
Is it buzzing similar to any of these noises: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
What you should do is remove the internal drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer. If still buzzing then it's a real mechanical problem...

SOURCE: acomdata hard drive doesnt show up on my computer

If you have the blinking red/blue light and clicking noise you should try a new AC adapter. I just got the same power supply from a friend's drive and the problem is gone. Drive is back to normal and all contents are intact. Don't be fooled by the green light on the AC adapter. Even though it's on, it might be damaged. I guess my was damaged by lightning a few days ago.

I have the same exact drive (I'm assuming as it's the same make/size since I don't have a model number) and what you need to do is turn the drive off and let it cool down. The drive is not well vented and it tends to over heat. I would get in the habit of turning the drive off whenever you're not using it because of this problem.

Try a new enclosure, the case is just that. A hard drive cannot actually repaired. You cant open it and fix it. It's either reliable and functioning or not. Purchase a new enclosure and test the old drive. Data recovery should be the last option..most places charge a down payment on a car, and most of the time ( in my 12 years ) its the cheap enclosure.

    Keep me posted.

Your warranty doesn not offer data recovery. Only a replacement. Many people are unaware of this so drive dompanies just forward those to a voicemail trap. Try investing in an enclosure that is more realiable, with a name that's reputable, you won't be left in the dark next time.....and considering it seldom if ever happens with seagate.
