Ok we tried tapping the F8 key, we also tried holding it down while starting up. I cannot get the startup options screen. Shows the Toshiba screen and goes black right after no matter what. Thanks for your help though any other ideas?

SOLUTION!!!!!! We called Toshiba and were told that it was basically power surges. The battery was fully charged but still plugged in, creating a surge. (This is what my Mom told me anyway who knows what the person actually said) I was confused because I've had my laptop for 3.5 years and it's always plugged in. However, my laptop has always been plugged into a power strip, my brothers was right into the wall, so maybe that was it. Hope this helps anyone else who might have this problem!

Black screen after startup

You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Screen stays black on startup of toshiba satellite L300

have you tried either switching between external and internal monitor usally Fn + F5 on toshiba or try plugging a monitor into the back and see if it displays.
if you get a display on the external monitor then its probably a screen or inverter fault if you donot get a display to an external screen then it is likley t be the graphics on the board itself.
hope this helps

Good morning, Kevin!
Sounds like an LCD problem. You can verify this by hooking up an external monitor. The external monitor will probably show a good display.
After verification of the problem, you may want to try to replug the LCD cable at both ends, just to see if that corrects the situation.
If that resolves things, all is well and good. If not, you may need a replacement LCD.
If the external monitor shows the same display, you may have a motherboard problem.
Hope this information is of some help.
