This may seem like a dumb question, but here goes. If I'm creating a network where a desktop computer will be the main computer, i.e., the router is plugged into the desktop computer, and I plan to wirelessly connect with my laptop, do I need to attach an ethernet adapter to the desktop computer?
no if your pc is connected to the router, then that one has its connection which i assume will be either usb connected or ethernet connected.
You laptop will connect via the wireless connection to the router, not your pc, so as long as your laptop has a wireless adapter then it will independantly connect to the router, your other pc does not have to be switched on as your router is connected to the net as long as it is switched on.
