There are discs available that will clean the lens in an optical drive. Maybe it is just dirty. If that doesn't help it sounds like the drive may be going bad. If that is the case the only solution is to replace it or start using an external USB drive.

My hardisk cant be read on my mac?

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

Not seeing new hard disk or reading XP cd-rom

It can use any 31/2" IDE hard drive. 30 Gb should be OK
If the BIOS cannot detect the hard drive or the CD drive then the drives maybe faulty or the disk controller in the computer is faulty.

Can be a lot of things.
Try with removing battery for 10s.
If that doesn't work, access RAM, remove it and install it again.

MY Gateway notebook 6510gz is always dyeing on me

You don't need a recovery cd. You just need to remove the hard drive and insert it into an external drive caddy. Then it will become just like an external hard drive. You can browse the drive to copy over your new files and then use the drive for backing up your new files in the future.

A disk read error

Hi,

The "clicking" and "disk read error" indicates a hard drive failure.  When the PC boots it can no longer read some files from or the entire HD.  The corrective measure would be to replace the HD and install your OS and programs. Alternately, you may try and reformat then re-install but then you would be operating with an unpredictable storage media and perhaps prolonging the inevitable.

If your reason for Safe Mode is to be able to access your files for purposes of backup, the constant trying/on-off just might worsen the condition of the HD. You can still try recovering by installing the HD in question inside a 2.5 enclosure to USB and install it as a removable device in a 2nd PC where you can try recover files.

Should you install a new HD and install the OS in your Gateway, you actually can use that to try and recover from the old HD. Recovery is 50/50.

Good luck and kind regards.
