Question about D-Link DI 514 Wireless Router (DI-514)

1 Answer

Confuguration Issue I recently switched from Dial-Up to DSL, and the DSL is working fine. I have my DSL modem connected to my desktop. I recently got a router so that I can browse the Internet with my laptop. I followed the instructions carefully to connect the router up with the modem and the computer. When I open up either the I.E. browser or the Firefox browser and try to go to, the same thing keeps happening with a few exceptions. Both browsers say that they are connecting, but I wait and wait and they don't connect. Only a couple of times did they connect, and when that happened and I got the login page, I enter admin for the id and leave the password field blank per the installation instructions. But it doesn't let me in as though I'm entering and invalid id and password. So this boils down to 2 problems: 1-Getting into the login page, and 2-Logging in when I get there I really could use some help.

Re: Confuguration Issue

You seem to be following the correct procedure, so the only thing left to do is re-set the router. My best guess is that the router password was inadvertently changed at some point. Reset to default settings: The following reset procedure will completely restore the default settings on the router including your password. Step 1 Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit. Step 2 With the router powered on, press and hold the Reset button. Step 3 Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds. Step 4 Release the Reset button. Step 5 The device is now at factory defaults. The default username is admin and leave the password blank. You'll need to follow all the steps you performed initially to re-connect to your ISP.

Telecom Issue, when a Netgear router (DG834G) linked to a small server unit, dissconnects the telephone line. The router works fine but no dial tone on the phone side of the micro filter. Any assistan

a POTs (plain old telephone) line should never be connected to a router. that adsl filter does not make a phone line share a data line.
ADSL is a type of internet service supplied over a phone line. think of it as raw (unusable) when its on the phone line. then you use your dsl filter/splitter to feed the raw internet into a special dsl modem and the other port can be used by a standard phone.

you will know a dsl modem when you see it because its uplink or internet port will only be big enough to fit a phone cord into, not an internet cord. these dsl modems then feed usable internet to your routers and all devices on your network. but, like i said before, at this point it is too late for your phone and internet to share the same wire.

OK, thats not entirely true

if your network is typical you can "get fancy" and use 4,5,7+8 for telephone or even put 2 data lines on the same wire (not recommended for long distances). however, this may involve cutting some wires and splicing them together or something.

Can you hook up dial-up to a dsl modem

Can you hook up a dial up what to a dsl? A modem? No, you need a dsl modem for a dsl line. Typically, a dial up is POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and connects to a POTS 56,000 K modem. DSL will run much faster but not as fast as cable.

Can't access modem from desktop

If your DSL works on PPPOE then you need to setup PPPOE on the 2wire router with the Complete Username and the PAssword for the PPPOW connection, if your DSL works on a Local IP address like or then first check the gateway address of the 2wire Router, if it's in the same IP address range like the DSL Modem like 192.168.1.x the you need to change the Local IP address of the router from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.2.x that should get you up and running with the DSL Modem.

Wireless connection works fine from the d-link router but the desktop linked from the phoneline keeps going offline. Why?

You've omitted some information about your hardware & configuration & connections.

You should have:

1. cable-modem connected to cable socket (or DSL-modem connected to telephone wall-jack);
2. router connected via Ethernet cable to the cable-modem (or DSL-modem)
3. desktop computer connected via Ethernet cable to the desktop computer
4. wireless device (iPod or netbook or notebook) connected over the "ether" to the router -- this connection will stay "up" almost "forever" (as long as there is AC-power to the router and power to the wireless device).

Which parts & connections do you have?

My modem ut-300r2u is not working properly, adsl function ... its damage inside the modem ... is dere any option to repair it???

The first thing that you can try here is to have the unit reset by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds but if that does not correct the problem , the next thing that you need to do here is to have the unit replace or have it check if they have a service center...

Telephone connection

Unless you have dial up, you arent supposed to be losing any connection between the two. If you are, i would call them up and have them come out to fix it for free. That is completely rediculous.

Ic help

Scenario 2 to 4: Scenario 2) The modem does not have an Ethernet port. The modem is a dial-up modem for traditional dial-up service. To use the Router, you need a cable/DSL modem and high-speed Internet connection.

Scenario 3) You cannot use the DSL service to connect manually to the Internet.
After you have installed the Router, it will automatically connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), so you no longer need to connect manually.

Scenario 4) The DSL telephone line does not fit into the Router’s Internet port.
The Router does not replace your modem. You still need your DSL modem in order to use the Router. Connect the telephone line to the DSL modem, insert the setup CD into your computer, and then follow the on-screen instructions

Yes, you do need a modem (DSL, Cable). This router does not function as a modem.
