I tried your solution and while it printed a test page it then refused to print any further pages. The printer status in the control panel continues to tell me it is offline but when I right click on this the prompt is that the printer can be put offline which suggests that it THINKS IT IS ONLINE and so is giving me no option to put it online. it is storing the printed pages but not printing.

The problem remains. The printer is communicating with my laptop but its status remains 'offline' This is its status also when I right click in the control panel mode as the only option is 'offline' Very frustrating as I know it is communicating with the laptop.

You might try bypassing the print spooler to see if that avoids the
problem. Right mouse click on the printer in Settings / Printers and select Properties. Depending on the printer there is likely to be a setting: Print direct to printer. Try it and see what happens.

Also the problem of Vista and printer always offline might be solved by uninstalling Adobe Reader
Good Luck

Go to your start menu... in the box type printer... when that box pops up... locate your printer... first make sure it is the default printer.... then right click and from the pop down menu select properties.... make sure the printer shows online there

Try to power off the printer for about 1 minute and disconnect the usb cable from your computer and after a minute connect the usb back and power on the printer, but if still check the printer under device manager and you may need to manually reinstall the printer driver..

Unplug printer USB, and reinstall the driver.

This time when you reinstall the driver keep printer unplugged and do the following:

Locate the driver installer file.
Click right button of mouse on installer file.
Chose 'run as administrator 'from dropdown menu.

Start driver installation with printer USB unplugged.

Connect printer usb only when asked by setup wizard.

Chose printer as default printer during installation

Hi, Uninstall the driver. switch off the printer. Disconnect the cables.
Restart the computer. Install the driver. Restart the computer. Connect the printer and switch it on. You may have to restart the computer again. It should work now.
I assume you are using correct drivers.

    Ok.
    Try this.
    Switch off the printer.
Delete that printer which says 'offline'

    Switch on the printer.
Now the New Printer icon should come up after some setup wizard.

Reconnect the printer, you should hear the usb connect sound, it should install the printer automatically, try printing again.

Also restart the laptop and reinstall the driver if noting happens.
Also look into the device manager right click my computer select manage, then on the left side select device manager. see any yellow ? or ! marks?

Your printer is not communicating with the Operating System.
First uninstall the printer. ( Make sure you have the printer driver disk )

Make sure the printer is OFF and disconnect the power lead to your desktop or laptop.

Leave the computer OFF for 2 to 3 minutes. I actually mean turn it off and disconnect your power cord to the computer. That will clear everything.

Plug in and on your computer and let it boot up. When its fully booted, click START / SETTINGS / PRINTERS and FAXes and click ADD A PRINTER.

Follow the instructions and have the appropriate driver disk or files on your computer to complete the installation.

Remember, most installations require the printer NOT be powered up or connected while you load the drivers. That is normally the last step and the driver loading will prompt you to turn on the power and make the connections.

Then you probably will have to reboot and voila, you're done.

Windows 7 were can i download the drivers for windows 7

Unfortunately, according to Dell's website, it looks like the A920 InkJet Printer is not compatible with Windows 7.

You could download earlier drivers for that printer from this page though (for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista).

Dell A920 with Windows Vista

Believe it or not... the driver is buried on the Dell site for Vista 64-bit. I search and searched ... and there it was.

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R153048&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=203948

In any case, I downloaded it, installed it, and it works fine. All the buttons (scan/copy) on the top work as well as printing. Now if I could just get my old XP machines to print to it on the network. But.. I think that is another thread.
