Question about Dishwashers

Gritty film on my glasses

I have a approximately 8 year old Kenmore Energy Star Dishwasher. Periodically I have had this problem. The glasses come out after washing with a grit on them. No really a film but gritt that I have to scrub really hard to get off.

Why does this happen and does it have to do with the dishwasher or does it have something to do with the plumbing in my sink.

I use jet dry also.

    It is white grit

  • dzipp Jan 07, 2009

It is white grit. I'm not sure if we have hard water in los angeles county. But I don't think the hard water is the problem because we didn't used to have this problem.

This gives me lots of ideas to try or think about before wasting alot of money on a plumber.
I'll definitely look into your solutions.
Thank you. If it doesn't work I'll make sense.

It's most likely caused by mineral build up within your washer, it's tub, and/ or your water lines. Jet Dry does help this but..
Just like a coffeemaker try running a cycle past the fill cycle, then add a cup of white vinegar and let the cylce complete.
One suggestion would be to add an in line water filter to the dishwasher supply line if there is not one there.
If there is replace it.
Same type you would find on a refridgerater, and replace as often
Let me know if this helps

Oooops, that was not supposed to be a "solution" but merely a "comment" Please, do not rate that yet. If you rate it, it closes the dialog. Please wait until we can actually determine the problem.

This is typically a rersult of to much detergent, a bad pwdered detergent, or clogged flow preventing proper desolving of detergent and proper rinsing.

Has it ever done this when you do not use jet dry?

If you always do so, try it for a while without. It could be force drying the undesolved detergent on the dishes.

Also try cleaning out the reservoir for the detergent and any tubes/channels it flows through.

Have you recently changed brands of detergent?

Have you tried cleaning a single glasses with vinegar. Take a glass, soak it in vinegar for a couple hours, wipe it dry and see if the film goes away. If it does you know vinegar will work to help. I use vinegar with every wash now cause the film builds up quickly. If the film doesn't go away then it is likely that the glasses are getting etched by a corrosive detergent.

Cascade and all other dishwasher detergent mfgrs have removed the phosphate from the product due to the edict from our friends in Washington D.C. You may add 'Dish Magic' that still contains Phosphate to your dishwasher dispenser (small amount), or get some trisodium phosphate at the hardward store to use. This is particularly significant if your water is hard. Making the water plenty hot helps too.

Gritty white film all over dishwasher and dishes

Another way to descale your dishwasher is to use vinegar. This is also very inexpensive. Put a cup of vinegar into the dishwasher and run it, allowing it to go through all cycles. I would turn the heated dry off.

Grit like residue after cycle finishes.

I had the same problem and it was fixed by switching dishwasher soap. We always used the same liquid soap for years and when this problem came out of the blue (about 8 months ago) I switched to Cascade action pacs with Dawn. It did the trick! No more residue since then. We now are having a problem with the dishwasher not draining (our unit is 8 years old), but the grit issue has been handled!

Dishes not getting clean

brittgee, there has been a number of service flashes on this model. One that has to do with the upper spray arm assy. Complaint is poor washability; gritty glasses, food redeposited on glasses, especially in the corners. They redesigned the upper spray arm to improve water spray to all corners of the upper rack. The new part number is 8269022. They also redesigned the third level spinner for more consistant rotation and better washability. This was also under a service flash. Part number.8193768. Other reasons for poor wash would be; low water temperature, rinse aid disp. not working, loading etc. Catriver...post back.
