Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Plate stops turning

The Sapcemaker came with the appliance package included with my new house almost 4 yrs. ago. Just recently someone in my family shut the door a little to hard. the result is that the plate no longer turns. I've removed the plate and tried turning the mechanism myself but it wont budge. Now im looking for a repair manual to try and fix the problem without using the expense of a repair.

The oven is only about 15 months old. the turntable works very sporadically.
about one time in 8 the turntable will operate. I've taken out the glass tray and
the wheeled piece below and cleaned it and made sure the tray lays properly
on the center disk. It doesn't make any difference.

I would initially suspect a bad door switch or broken door switch mount, but if you can't turn the turntable motor by firmly grasping the couler, then it may be a broken coupler or motor. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383 If you still need help, feel free to contact me directly or reply here.

Black and decker microwave works fine except the table not turning. Few months earlier it stopped turning but started working again after few days by itself. This oven has convection facility also and it...

Replacement of the turntable motor should be carried out by a qualified appliance repair service.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT!

Attempt this only if you are competent.

But here is a basic method if you are mechanically minded and have electrical safety knowledge.

I am assuming the plastic coupler is not split or broken and causing the problem.

The motor assembly is fixed to the base of the oven usually with two screws and access is obtained usually by removing the inspection plate directly beneath the motor. It is usually a plug in synchronous motor that revolves at a few revs per minute but the plastic cogs in the motors gear box fail and the motor assembly must be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and obtainable usually from a domestic appliance repair shop.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity and turn it upside down if it is a tabletop model, a little more complicated if it is built in!
Remove the inspection plate, sometimes it must be cut out with sharp cutters, and disconnect the motor. Remove the motor and go and get a new one. Fit the new motor and fit the inspection cover back on the base by turning it to fit and using an extra screw fix it then put the microwave back in its position. Plug it back in, with the turntable and plate. Put a cup of water on the plate inside of the oven and heat for 20 seconds to check the plate goes round.
Hope this helps.

Tip

How to replace the bulb of a microwave oven

Replacing a Built-in Microwave Oven
  1. Step 1 Locate the cabinet above the built-in microwavemag-glass_10x10.gif oven. Find two screwed-in bolts. Unscrew the bolts while someone holds the microwave steady.
  2. Step 2 Unplug the electrical cord from the cabinet above and snake the wire down the hole towards the microwave oven. Continue having someone hold the microwave steady.
  3. Step 3 Roll microwave to left or right to set it free from the mounting bracket in the back. The microwave oven should now be unlocked from its position and can be removed completely from the area.
  4. Step 4 Install the mounting bracket on the new microwave that was included in the package.
  5. Step 5 Snake the electrical cord of the new microwave through the hole in the above cabinet. Plug in the electrical cord.
  6. Step 6 Lift the microwave and rest it to line up with the existing mounting plate on the wall. Roll it until the microwave is locked in place.
  7. Step 7 Use a screwdriver or electric drill to screw in bolts above cabinet into the microwave mounting bracket. This will keep the microwave securely and tightly in place. Your new microwave is ready to use.

Small gas leak smelled inside house from GE Adora (just 2 yrs old). Have moved stove and have put soapy water with paint brush on every connection including regulator...don't see any leak evidence...any...

You may have to use dish soap straight, do not use the brush. I use an old spray bottle and dish soap straight, not watered down, to find my leaks. Gas is a very low psi. Soapy water will not bubble up. It can and will just be pushed out of the way. Do not forget any other gas appliances in the house, hot water heater, stove, any thing that uses gas. Please check all. Recheck your stove and even any connections inside, on/off valve etc. Hope this helps Fixya up.

Kenmore microwave

i fixed by unplugging the microwave with the door open. I plugged it back in and the F6 was gone. I was then able to set the clock and turn the light on/off . When I closed the microwave door, the F6 came back on and the microwave was making a humming noise. I slapped the side of the microwave near the keypad, and the F6 cleared from the readout and the humming stopped. The microwave is working fine now. Don't know why, except maybe slap on the side reset a relay or something. Anyway, I will never by a Sears Kenmore appliance for the rest of my life. The door rattles when you open a close it (like a part inside the door is broken) and this is the second time a fault code has appeared during use. I had GE Profile appliances at my last house, which are more $$ initial cost, but who wants to screw around buying a new microwave every four or five years. I'll happily spend a couple hundred more for the peace of mind and knowing that it will work during Thanksgiving dinner with the family over.

My spacemakerXL Microwave is only 2 yrs. old. It started making a loud noise (like the fan) when turned on. Then durin the heating cycle, the (?fan?) stopped completely. The appliance still heats, but...

Yes! I would not use it until it is fixed, because it sounds like your internal cooling fan is not running. This means your magnetron is not being cooled and will be destroyed if run too long with no cooling.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

Breaker tripping

Make sure it is plugged into a 20 amp circuit. If it is in a kitchen it should be a 20amp breaker if it trips a 20 amp breaker it needs to be replaced. If it is a new house and you plug it in in the kitchen and it trips a 15 amp breaker then the house does not meet code. ref Article 210.52(B)(1) NEC

Partial Power Outage

This could be very dangerous.

I would first call your electric company and ask if they have any problems with their lines, etc. We recently had this problem at our home and it was in their circuits.

My mother in law had a similar problem and we caught it in time. In her house, several outlets showed extremely low voltage and the others showed extremely high voltage.

It turned out to be a bad neutral connection on the line going from the pole to the house. The electric company fixed it at no charge.

Also, you or someone you know should measure the voltages coming out of your outlets, or call an electrician right away.

You may have a loose circuit breaker or a bad connection somewhere your electrical panel or elsewhere in your neutral line.

This can lead to destruction of your appliances or even a fire, so please don't delay.
