Question about Philips HTS3440/37 System

1 Answer

Playing movies through usb port?

I have a Phillips HTS3544 I have decided to play movies from an external hard drive via the dvd player's USB port and this works just fine. The picture is clear, but the sound is very choppy. It's easy to view the dvd menus on the screen to select which movie I want to view. The menus within the movies do not work with the controller. I thought storing movies on the ext hd would save me from putting them DVD's. Please help!!!!!!

Hi,

I cant play music from my laptop to my sony dav tz130

Usually the only direct audio output from a laptop is through the stereo mini-jack for headphones. This would employ a standard sterteo cable to the audio input jacks on the rear panel of your Sony, but if those inputs on the Sony are already in use then you can't use that option. However, you might look at external USB sound cards which plug into a USB port on the laptop. These external sound devices may have a USB output to go to your TV as well.

Enjoy/watch Blu-ray movies on HDTV via WD TV

blurayripper-wdhd-theme091204.jpg

Want to find a solution to playback Blu-ray movies on your widescreen TV via WD HD Media Player? As a matter of fact, WD TV HD Media Player promises to play just about any video format you throw at it, including high definition video up to 1080p. You put the videos on any USB mass storage device, like an external hard drive or a thumb drive, and plug it into the device, WD TV HD Media Player will recognize the files on the drive and play any video, audio, or photo files it finds. However, according to the feedback provided by some users, WD TV HD Media Player does play m2ts selectively only, some are, and some are not. In purpose of solving this problem, this post will talk about how to rip Blu-ray movies to USB for playback on TV via WD TV HD Media Player.

WD TV HD Media Player supported file formats:

Video: MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264), Subtitle SRT (UTF-8)

Audio: MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA Playlist PLS, M3U, WPL

Photo: JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP, PNG

Now let’s have a look at its operation steps.

Choose MKV format, how to rip Blu-ray to MKV?

Step 1
Download, install and run this Blu-ray ripping software
After launched it, you will see the following interface at once. There are three ways provided to import Blu-ray files, namely through clicking on "DVD Rom", "DVD Folder", and "IFO/ISO".

Step 2
Load the Blu-ray disc.
Click on the “DVD Rom” button to import Blu-ray movie from the disc, or click on “DVD Folder” button and browse to your target files. It takes a few seconds to load the whole movie, so be patient. A view log will pop up when loading process completes, you can simply click "OK" to confirm or press Ctrl+O to close it. Now all the M2TS files in file list are checked, right-click and choose "Uncheck All". What you need is the main movie---the one with longest duration. Check it and leave unwanted M2TS files unchecked. You can rename the output file by clicking on the file name in Destination File column. Right below the file list you could find "Subtitle" and "Audio" droplist, where you can set output subtitles and dubbings to the languages you like.

Step 3
Click on Format bar, select “Common Video” from the format list and in submenu you could find MKV video format. If you would like to maintain best quality, just back to the format list and move down your mouse to point at “HD Video”, here you can find “MKV HD Video”. Check it and hit on the small folder icon to specify an output folder. Then click “Settings” and customize advanced audio and video parameters. For instance, you may set Video to 1920*1080p (to fit for the wide screen), 25mbps, 30fps, and Audio to AC3/AAC codec, 192kbps, 5.1 channels. Click "OK" to confirm your settings.

Step 4. Start conversion.

Click on the “Convert” button and the program will rip Blu-ray movies to MKV video format for you very soon. You could set auto shutdown in progress window (it pops up once you click Convert) or leave it there and come back later (the ripper will tell you how long it takes). Enjoy the converted MKV videos!

Once finished, you can get the generated files for WD TV via clicking on "Open" button with ease. Afterwards, just copy the output files to My Passport portable hard drive or other USB drive, and then connect WD TV to your TV, plug your USB drive into the player and you are ready to enjoy the movies ripped from your Blu-rays.

That's all, Enjoy it!

How to watch commercial DVDs on your wide screen TV via WD TV Mini Media Player

WD TV Mini Media Player provides an easy and affordable way to play back your digital media on your wide screen TV.  It serves as a conduit between your TV set and USB drive storage, no matter it is a camcorder, a humble flash drive, or an external HDD. Simply connect WD TV Mini to your TV, plug a USB-connected storage into the player and you are ready to enjoy all your digital media in DVD quality playback.
WD TV Mini Media Player supported media formats:
Videos:
AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG4), MPG/MPEG, VOB/ISO, MP4/MOV (MPEG4), RM or RMVB 8/9/10
Audios:
MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, OGG, APE
From the above list we can see that VOB is a playable format for WD TV Mini Media Player, does it mean that WD TV Mini can play all kinds of DVDs – whether home made DVDs or commercial DVDs? The answer is WD TV can not decrypt copy protected commercial DVDs, so you have to rip them. This tutorial aims to show you how to make it possible for you to watch commercial DVDs on your wide screen TV via WD TV Mini Media Player. What you will need is Pavtube DVD Ripper, it not only rips, but it encodes too. Following is the detailed operating steps:

Step 1: Click "DVD Rom", "DVD Folder" or "IFO/ISO" to load DVD files into this program.

Step 2: Select subtitle and audio track
Click on the pull down menu of "Subtitle" and "Audio" respectively to select your needed subtitle and audio language.
Step 3: Select output format for WD TV Mini Media Player
Click on the drop-down list at the end of "Format" to choose an output format for WD TV Mini Media Player. Your selection should be in the range of AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG4), MPG/MPEG, VOB/ISO, MP4/MOV (MPEG4), RM or RMVB 8/9/10. Here I select "Xvid AVI" as an example:

Step 4: Click "Settings" button to adjust video and audio parameters
The user manual tells us that when playback .avi (Xvid) video files, WD TV Mini supports up to 720*576 30fps or 720*480 30fps, so we need to follow the manual while ripping a DVD.

Step 5: Click "Convert" button to start DVD ripping
Once finished, you can get the generated files for WD TV Mini via clicking on "Open" button with ease. Afterwards, just copy the output files to My Passport portable hard drive or other USB drive, and then connect WD TV Mini to your TV, plug your USB drive into the player and you are ready to enjoy the movies ripped from your commercial DVDs.

On my Panasonic SA-BT230 blu ray player it will not recognise my external hard drive in the USB port, how do i fix this? thanks

hi i have a 500gb external hard drive with its own power supply, also same blu ray player, to get it to recognise your usb device you need a tool like mini tool partition wizard i got mine from a torrent site but im sure it has a free trial, any way connect your HDD to a computer and back up all data before continuing, then open the partitioning tool (these options are not available in windows which is why you need third party software) select the HDD and select delete (only after you have backed up your data), then apply once this is complete you will see the HDD is is now "unallocated" select the drive again and select create on this box select fat32 file system and change from logical drive to primary and give it a name if you like then hit ok then apply and thats it. move all your data back and it will see the drive again.
I should mention that i hit one snag when i did this, as you know the bluray player will play movie files .AVI and not .MKV or .MP4 but once i carried out this operation my blu ray player (sa-bt230) will play these other formats but not the .AVI ones, which in the manual is states it will not play the others only .AVI's.
not a problem as such for me as i can now watch my downloads in better res and with DTS sound.
hope this helps

The system plays old DVDs but stalls when playing new ones such as AVATAR. Its not the DVD as it plays another system - Is an upgrade to software required - Is so? how do I do it

Hello,

yes, it requires an update. Step one is to find the manufacturers website for the player you are using.

Go to their technical support page and download the latest release or update for that player. (You may be asked to enter the model number and or serial number of the player you are using.)

Save or burn the downloaded file to a DVD and insert into your player. (While there are many easy to use DVD Burner software packages, Roxio is a user friendly application found on most computers.) Follow the on-screen prompts.

Or if the your player has a USB port, download the update into a flash drive, insert the flash into the usb port of your player, press Usb on the player's remote and the update should commence.

Good luck.

Can I connect External HDD to my SONY DAV DZ 270

Hi,
You can connect external HDD to dz270... BUT you can only play audio & photos through it. It's the limitation of dz270, you can't play video through USB.
dz270 cant recognize NTFS filesytem, do a FAT32 partition of 200GB or so.
I bought 500GB seagate free agent ... but i couldn't use it with my dz270 to play movies :-). I could have gone for dz290 :-(
