Type in the software you are looking for and the system you are in a search engine (such as google) and look through all the pages it finds. One of them will have what you are looking for. I have noticed it especially helpful to look at the forum pages and sometimes the manufacturer pages (of course not in your case) but nevertheless it will be somewhere.

Make sure when you find what you are looking for that your system will support it. One that i reccomend if you are looking for a tv viewing and recording program is SAGE TV.

I hope this is what you are looking for. But you can check it out at this link:http://www.sagetv.com/sagetv.html

Leave the installation finish as you don't need the mouse or anything else untill it complets.
This could take an hour or longer.

You need to boot from them to launch the recovery process. The key to press to select boot device is in the first screen that appears. Press it, select the cd/dvd unit and follow the instructions on the screen.

Sounds like you've got a problem with your hard drive.

An easy way to troubleshoot your system would be to (ON A WORKING COMPUTER)

Download and burn a copy of UBUNTU

Boot the non-working computer with the UBUNTU disc, check the top under PLACES to see if your hard drive and files appear.

If you need more help, let me know. There's a lot to cover.

Motherboard upgrade - Sony Vaio VGC-RB62G - RAID 0 issue

Why don't you try to get your main drive running before getting into Raid Configurations. Set your single drive to Master and run setup telling it you have one drive. Once you are satisfied that it is not some other fluky error, put in the other drive and I believe if SATA you don't even have to worry about Master Slave. Go about your boot and go into setup again. Hopefully all is good with the world and all that has to be done is fix up BIOS. No matter what, there is never an " out of the box " clean system. Make sure you plug your cables in correctly. I assume you're running EIDE. You'll get it.

I have a Sony Vaio VGC-V517G but the CD/DVD opticle driver does not work Sony sales it for $200. Does some one know where I can get it for cheaper?

A Driver is a small piece of software, that allows the Operating System to 'communicate' with a device.

Windows XP is an example of an Operating System. (O/S)
A typical device?
An Optical drive, (CD/DVD), Mouse, Keyboard, and Graphics card, are a few examples.

This is Sony eSupport, and the Drivers download page, for the Sony Vaio VGC-V517G Notebook PC,

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGC-V517G&region_id=1

Go down to the third file listing -
CD/DVD Drives - 2file(s)

Left-click on the + sign before,
CD/DVD Drives -2file(s)

If your optical drive is the Sony DW-D56A, download the second file listed,
(Sony DW-D56A DVD -+RW Optical Drive Firmware Update Utility)

I also suggest you download the first file listed also.

Download both files. Open one at a time. Open one file, then install the file. Then open the other file, install it.

Go to the right, and left-click on the icon that looks like a blue World, with a green down arrow under it.

On the next page go to the right, and left-click on that same icon again. (Under the - Download Now - heading)

Should you need additional info, or help with the above, come back, and state so in a comment.

Or ,have I understood your problem wrongly? If so state it in a comment. Allow me the chance to give you the right information, before you rate the solution.

Using the 2nd hard drive

Not without you saying what OS you're using, how you want to use it in applications, and how you wanted to attach it to the machine if it's not already installed.

I mean, offhand I'd say if you have 2 free bays in there, to either use those or mount that drive (along with a generally identical one) in Zalman drive coolers in the case, connect them so you can use SCA RAID 0 on them, set that RAID up, format to XFS or another choice filesystem, and start using it then.

What type of hard drive goes in a VGC-RB42G.....SATA or PATA

Hi JG78 - If you bought the stock model of your PC it originally came with a SATA 250GB drive. SATA drives have a faster transfer rate so if your PC can handle it ( and it can ) then you definitely want to get a SATA drive. Make sure you back up any info, documents, pictures, etc on cd's or dvd's. Or when you install the new drive you can just make your old drive a secondary drive and transfer the info you need to save before you remove it. Also be sure you have all software and drivers you need before you install the new drive so you won't have the hassle of having to locate them later. If you need to download them you can put them on a cd so they'll be ready to go. If this answered your question PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you need more help or assistance with this just add a comment and I'll be glad to give you a hand. Thanks.

Recover a Sony VGC-RA710G computer

Unfortunately there is no way that you'll be able to test those recovery CD's without having to use them. Keep in mind that those discs only cover software and do not backup your documents. I recommend an external hard drive to do so. However in terms of Microsoft Office, if you have Vista you may a problem getting it reinstalled because Microsoft has introduced new DRM technologies to prevent theft. Have you used all 3 of your licenses?
The great thing is that in the worst case scenario you merely have to be on the phone with Microsoft for 10-15 minutes getting a new activation code.
