Question about Kodak ATS Ektagraphic Slide Projector

1 Answer

Dark shutter hangs in up position

The dark shutter goes upright to block light to the lens and screen during slide change, but it fails to lay back down and allow light to pass through. I can trip it with a pencil but it just hangs up again.
Any Ideas

The dark shutter requires an adjustment to re-set it's "trip point". You should take it to a factory-trained repair dealer who has the service documentation & tools to make the adjustment.

I replaced the bulb, works fine but now there is no light projection to view slides what do I need to replace?

It definitely has a lens in it then? Kids take them out to play with them and they are pretty useful as a magnifying glass.

If the projection bulb works and there is a lens in it, the only thing it can be is the shutter that comes across the lens to blackout the screen as the slide is changing. As the carousel starts to move, the shutter comes across, the old slide is removed, the new one inserted and then the shutter retracts to show that slide on the screen.

How you get to it and what is likely to be wrong with it, I am not sure, a linkage come off it or something similar?

The projector keeps turning off the screen image but not powering down

The projector has a feature that keeps the screen dark when there is no slide in the projection gate. The light is blocked, but not turned off. There is a latch on the slide of the shutter that controls when it opens (slide in the gate) and when it remains closed (no slide in the gate). It sounds like the latch on the side of the dark shutter needs adjustment. Here is the website where you can get the adjustment procedure.

The bulb lights up but it does not drop the photo to view

Hi Faye,
There is a "dark shutter" that blocks the light that probably is not opening.
It can be adjusted, but requires some tools and a bit of patience.
The process to adjust the DARK SHUTTER is:-
[1] Remove for the LOWER HOUSING.

[2] Insert a thin SLIDE into the GATE MECHANISM; the DARK SHUTTER should open.
Hope this helps you and you have the slide projector working again soon.

The light is not projecting through the focus lens area

If the tray moves from slide to slide, and each one drops into the optical gate and is ejected back into the tray correctly in succession, then what you have is either a missing spring on the shutter or a mis-adjusted dark shutter latch. You can still review service manuals for the most recent models of slide projectors on the Kodak website ( Parts are available from:

My Kodak 4600 carousel slide projector - will not send light out through the lens. There is some gate or baffle or something blocking the light. How can I fix this problem?

It is probably the Dark Shutter adjustment. The procedure is:

Adjusting the DARK SHUTTER

[1] Do the removal for the LOWER HOUSING.

[2] Insert a thin SLIDE into the GATE MECHANISM; the DARK SHUTTER should open.

[3] Check the the PRESSURE PAD is correctly aligned with the the DARK SHUTTER.
[4] Bend the PRESSURE PAD to adjust the alignment.

This is from page 34 of the SERVICE MANUAL, which you can view in its entirety here:

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa! We would sure appreciate a 4 "thumbs-up" rating for this FREE answer. Happy holidays!

AF-3 carousel, lamp on but light guard prevents picture

Based on your description, I suspect the coil spring that tensions the "dark shutter" has either broken or has popped off it's mount. To be absolutely sure, take your projector to a factory-trained repair dealer.

Projector light does not shine. (Power is on, bulb

I will assume from your description that the projector is powered on and you can look in the rear vents and see the lamp illuminated, yet the light does not shine on the screen.
The Ektapro 9020 and most of the Ektagraphic line of projectors are equipped with a "dark shutter". What that does is keep the screen dark unless a slide drops into the gate. At that time the sensing circuits trigger and open the shutter, allowing light through the slide & onto the screen.

The first slide advanced and then a black piece came across the lens and didn't retract. what do we do?

These projectors are equipped with a "dark shutter", which stays closed unless it detects a slide in the "gate" (projection path). With the projector on, try GENTLY inserting a pencil on the movable levers that hold the slide vertical in the gate. If the "dark shutter" does not open, then chances are the lever that "trips" it open has been bent or somehow moved out of position.
I recommend you contact a factory-trained repair dealer.

No light source through lens

The blackout shutter is on a very sensitive "trigger". When the two silver pressure pads that push against a slide inside the gate (aperture) are flat against the gate- that is no slide in place - the pads are linked to the trigger and make the blackout shutter stay up, blocking light from hitting the screen when no slide is in place. When there is a slide, the pads trigger the spring mounted shutter to fall down.

Least likely but possible is that the spring has come off one end of the shutter. If so, disassembly of the projector casing , not the mechanism, will be needed.

Most likely is that the trigger is out of adjustment. It's fairly simple but if you overcompensate and/or don't understand exactly how it works you can end up with the shutter not working at all.If that happens the projector will still work but the light will flash on the screen at each slide change. So whether you want to tackle it will depend on your comfort zone as far as 'fine" adjustments go. If you don't get it right you may have to do some major dissasembly of the projector to get to the mechanism. You will not need to take any part of the mechanism apart however.

Just thought of one other possibility. Look into the side of the gate where the slides fall into, with a strong flashlight. you'll see the trigger (black, part of the shutter itself) and you may be able to see where it makes very tenuous, light contact with another part of the mechanism (depending on the model). Carefully clean it with a Q-tip and WD 40 or alcohol. Be careful not to leave any cotton behind. Then apply, with the tube of the Q-tip, some very light grease, and only a tiny bit. Recommended is Super Lube with Teflon available from many industrial supply stores and inter net sites. If the old lube and/or dirt have piled up there, this may be all you need to do.

As for docjibe's problem with no forward/advance, it's a common problem and it means a critical nylon link has broken inside. it usually takes an expert to do the job correctly. In a pinch, you can, with some experience to get the right "touch", gently and quickly brush down and outwards with your thumb, on the grey button marked Select. The tray will usually advance.
