I opened my Lingo after a couple of years and put new batteries in it. It doesn't come on when I press the red button. I assume the battery contacts may be dirty, but I can't get to them

You can use a cotton swab wet with a cleaning solution (or some alcohol) to clean the battery contacts.
Electronic items are damaged faster when you don't use them. Therefore the problems might be not only with battery terminals.
