Question about Samsung HLN5065W 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
I have an HL-R6768W that I purchased probably right when they first came out. A few months ago I went to turn on the TV and first heard a problem that I'm hoping is just the color wheel. I heard the normal "spinning up" of the fan or color wheel, but instead of "catching", it spun at a really high RPM, then shut down, then spun up again really high, then shut down. This each spin-up cycle lasts maybe 15 seconds, and it does it maybe 4 times before stopping with the three lights on the power button remaining lit. This is happening more frequently now, maybe once a week. If I leave the TV as is and walk away, it usually turns on about 10 minutes later. Or else if I unplug the TV and plug it back in, it usually starts up normally. I just replaced the bulb, which helped the picture quality as the display was getting darker, but the high pitched spinning up and down is still there. Anyone have any suggestions? Is this a symptom of a bad color wheel, or more? Would appreciate any advise. Thanks!
The high-pitched whine is definitely the color wheel. The early color wheels had problems and many had to be replaced. As part of the turn-on process, the TV checks for light and then checks for color wheel sync. If the bearings are wearing out/dried out, it could cause issues with getting the proper color wheel sync, causing the set to not pass the turn on sequence.
Check Sears or partstore.com for a color wheel. I like sears for experimental replacements since they allow easy returns.
BTW, mine is an early 61". My color wheel was replaced when I had to replace my Light Engine. My in-laws 50" was an early one and theirs went out within 2 years.
