Husky generator will not stay running

I have no problem starting the engine or running it at 3/4 choke, but when I move the choke lever to the run position it immediately stalls out. This machine is in new condition but has not been run in a long time. If it is bad gas why would it stay running in the 3/4 choke position? Please help.

Let the engine warm up for a couple of minutes and see if it will run with the choke off. I have a couple of small engines which crank well and won't run cold but do OK after I let them warm up a bit.
Normally I would say you have a carb problem with gas not getting from the carb bowl, into the jet and into the engine.
Your engine being new it could still be a problem.
All the air coming into an engine is supposed to come thru the carb. If you have air leaking in from somewhere else then to get the air/fuel correct enough to run you are having to close the choke.
Check for leaks by cranking the engine and doing a quick spray of carb cleaner all around the mounting areas but not near the air intake.
If there is an air leak the engine will respond by changing rpm.
If you don't find an air leak, it's the carb.

ajust the float in your carb (bend the brass tab in that the top of the needle valve touches)and clean this needle valve. the bowl can be removed with a 7/16 box wrench on the bottom brass nut that is also a needle jet (clean this jet ,some models it is just a jet, others it is ajustable and needs to be 1 turn out to start then ajust wile running hot untill it stops surging) the problem is not allowing enough fuel to fill the float bowl

My generator wont start. I have cleaned the spark plug. What should the gap be ?

The choke of any engine should be set to "closed" during startups and then moved to "open" once the engine warms up. Depending on the style of your generator, this choke lever may be positioned in a few different places. On many generators, it can be found directly above the air filter on the side of the unit. On others, the choke is builtin to the power control knob (such as with the WEN Inverter series). Either way, it should be set to closed (also referred to as the start or the choke position) when starting the generator. Once the engine ignites, move the choke to the ON/RUN/OPEN position for operation. If the engine is already warm (for instance, if it was running for a while and you are refueling), the choke lever should be set to the RUN (open) position for starting.

If the gas tank is full, but no fuel is getting to the carburetor, there may be a problem with the fuel line or fuel valve. The fuel valve controls the flow of fuel from the gas tank to the carburetor. Make sure that this is set to OPEN to allow fuel to flow into the proper channels. If the valve is set to OPEN but the fuel still does not properly flow, you can do two things. First of all, if there is a vacuum relief valve on top of the gas tank, make sure that it has been opened. Secondly, unplug the outlet hose from the intake side of the fuel valve to see if gasoline is freely flowing or not (have a bucket ready in case the gas flows fine). This will help you determine what part of the fuel line (if any) is clogged up. If there is an in-line fuel filter between the fuel valve and carburetor, also check it to make sure it is not blocked.

Only runs with choke

There is an air leak in the seals somewhere between the carb and the intake manifold. You are getting too much air! ALL of those seals need to be changed, As the paper seals age they develop small cracks that kill the vacuum made by the engine to pull in the gas/air mixture!

How to start the generator

Hi Joe, I had asked for a little clarification and have not received any information. I will answer this question based on the generator is in good working order and it is a recoil start. Open the petcock, (this is the fuel valve) and give it about a minute to fill the fuel bowl on the carburetor. If your generator has an engine an on/off kill switch, set to on. If the generator has an auto idle switch set it to off. If the engine has a throttle lever located under the carburetor, push it all the way down (full throttle). Pull the choke knob out completely, there is a detent on the choke for half choke, pull it past this for full choke. pull the recoil starter rapidly. As soon as the engine starts running push the choke knob to half choke, this will allow the engine to run smooth while it's warming up. Depending on the climate that you are in, warm up time will vary. After a minute or two in cold climates start pushing the choke knob in, if it starts to run poorly pull it back out too the half position and let it warm up some more. When you can posh the choke in without the engine faltering it is ready to go. In warmer climates you might be able to start the engine without the choke or in the halfway position. Robin Subaru makes some of the finest small engines available. I would choose a Robin over a Honda every time. I hope this gets your generator going, and once again this is based on the generator being in good working order. Good luck, Michael Burke.

How to start a gas generator (should the choke be in or out, to the right or the left before starting

Most Generac generators have a lever for the choke that pulls out. So if the generator is being started for the first use or cold you should choke when starting . Let it run for 30-45 sec. then push it in . Once the engine has been run or warm you dont need to choke every time when starting .
